As some of you may know I wrote an article a while ago (www.westwaleschronicle.co.uk/blog/2016/10/29/wwc-exclusive-review-of-akala-live-at-monkey-bar-swansea-featuring-artist-project/) about going to a music gig to see the amazing Akala and whilst I was there I really struck gold. Not only did I get to meet and greet Akala, he chose a wicked support act; Project. Since then I’ve got to speak to him and have been lucky enough to get a sneak peak of his EP Project: Purge which is out 31/05/17 this Wednesday!
The 25 year old from Cardiff blew everybody away with his performance at the 10 years of Akala tour, The passion and emotions conveyed through each song can be felt so deeply. I am super excited to be writing about him again. It is so refreshing to listen to rap music that isn’t about sex or drugs but about real life.
Purge has 5 tracks;
- Vocalise
- Him
- Energy
- Aftermath
- Midnight Rush (Ft. Sophie Adams)
Purge is an insight into the mind of this lyricist and musician. Despite all the metaphors, it is actually very raw. You can feel all the emotions that he’s been through to produce these songs. All the songs have a different pace and different flows which a lot of rappers fail to do. Every song is relatable to someone, The whole EP screams at you confidence and certainty which Eminem didn’t do until his third album! I absolutely hate a monotonous beat in hip-hop so I’m happy to hear different sounds in each song and how they compliment the lyrics. The general theme is worshipping your ego and let go to be yourself and if like me you love a good quote, you can grab many from this! My personal favourite song is Midnight Rush as I feel it’s more upbeat with the wicked vocals. It reminds me of The King Blues early days, which I guess is where his punk/ska roots show! Its definitely got more of a summer vibe although still fits the strong theme.
All of the tracks will be available on Wednesday, CD copies will be available to purchase as well as downloads on iTunes and Spotify and downloads for free on Soundcloud.
Music performances are usually always better than a CD and what you get with Project is a performance; not just rapping. Project is performing at the legendary Boomtown Fair on the Crazy Calamities stage at 4pm – If you are lucky enough to be going make sure you head there! With massive names such as Black Sun Empire, Ed Solo (my personal favourite), Skindred, Reel Big Fish, Cypress Hill and many more; you won’t want to miss out! 10-13th August near Winchester, Hampshire. There are still tickets available on their website. He is also performing at the exciting Pembs festival in Haverfordwest. For any more information on upcoming gigs be sure to like and follow his facebook page www.facebook.com/projectmusicofficial/
