• Action for Children’s Ty Laura short breaks project chosen by regional utility company

An army of Western Power Distribution (WPD) apprentices have transformed the gardens of Action for Children’s Ty Laura short breaks project, which provides respite care and support for children and young people who have learning or physical disabilities, in just four days.

The thirty-two strong group of apprentices has built wheelchair-friendly paths, a den, sensory tunnels, a chalet, a new swing and generally made the garden area more accessible to children with physical disabilities.  The work concluded with a big thank you party for the apprentices attended by staff and the families who use the Swansea-based service.

Shelley Pearce, registered manager of Ty Laura short breaks, said: ‘We’re so grateful for the brilliant work done by the WPD team.  It’s totally transformed the grounds that just about served a purpose but now can be accessed by every child and young person who comes to Ty Laura.

‘This work will make a huge and immediate difference to the project and I’m sure the apprentices have learned a lot in taking on such a challenge in just four days.  I hope they leave here satisfied in a job well done for those children and young people in our community who face significant difficulties on a daily basis.  A big thank you to all the apprentices and WPD staff who made this happen from all the staff and families at Ty Laura.’

Darren Berry one of the six trainers also involved in the project explained: “Everyone involved in this project should be immensely proud of what they have achieved. We must remember, many of these guys have no experience in construction or landscaping but they have left a transformed space that we hope will be enjoyed for many years to come by all children during their respite.”
