Pitch and Park in Carmarthen

A number of parking spaces at Carmarthen’s St Peter’s Car Park will be fenced off whilst work gets underway to renew the town football club’s pitch.

Carmarthen Town AFC is benefitting from a new 3G all-weather pitch, which is being installed over the next few weeks.

The club’s location next to the busy town centre car park means a huge engineering feat is underway to ensure minimum impact on visitors and shoppers, as well as the health and safety of everyone involved.

Small sections of the car park which are used less often will be fenced off to ensure lorries carrying around 6,000 tonnes of earth and stone can move safely.

Contractors have also put a full plan in place and council transport officers and local members Cllr Gareth John and Cllr Alun Lenny have been kept informed.

The councillors say the short term upheaval will be worth it in the long-term as the pitch is part of a community scheme that will benefit hundreds of people in Carmarthen and surrounding areas.

The community project will benefit young people from across the town and will be used by primary schools, a special needs unit, family centres, youth clubs and University of Wales Trinity St David (UWTSD).
The pitch will also be suitable for disabled sport with accessible changing rooms and a community learning centre.

“This will be of huge benefit to the town,” said Cllr John. “This work is likely to take around six weeks, but the council and the contractors are working together to ensure works are undertaken quickly and safely.”

Stephen Pilliner, Head of Transport and Engineering, said: “We have ensured that any impact on St Peter’s car park is minimised, however a number of low occupancy spaces will be unavailable during some phases of the works. Our Park and Ride scheme is of course available from Nantyci.

“We thank visitors for their patience whilst these works are underway.”
