National Licensing Week

CARMARTHENSHIRE County Council’s licensing officers are raising awareness of their work as part of this year’s National Licensing Week (June 19-23).

Councils across the UK are promoting the important role licensing has to play day to day – from supporting the licensed trade and organisers of temporary events to taxi drivers and charity fundraising collectors.

The theme for the week is ‘licensing is everywhere’, as despite its role in everyday life, licencing often goes unnoticed. The aim of this campaign is to change that perception.

Here in Carmarthenshire, a small team of officers deal with licensing enquiries, process applications, enforce the law and deal with complaints from members of the public regarding licensed premises or activities.

The council’s website also includes up to date information regarding regulating events, including draft templates for organisations to make the process easier.

Cllr Philip Hughes, Executive Board Member for Public Protection, said: “Licensing plays a vital role in public protection. There are many ways licensing effects our lives day to day – you may enjoy a night out at a pub or event, or an evening at a the bingo, then you may catch a taxi home, each of which is possible due to our licensing team’s hard work.

“National Licensing Week is an opportunity to celebrate the work that they do and raise awareness of the importance of our licensing team. They regulate activities or businesses, premises and event organisers to ensure they are safe for the public and comply with the law”.

The licensing team will be generating awareness through joint working with the police, immigration officers and others during the week. They will also be taking part in social media campaigns, which can be followed using the Twitter hashtag #NLW2017 on @CarmsCouncil.
