A KEY parcel of land has been acquired by the council at Carmarthen West.
The 20-acre site, formerly part of Pontgarreg Farm, will be used for new housing, a new primary school and associated infrastructure, in line with the adopted Planning & Development Brief for the
area.
Work has already started on the new Carmarthen West Link Road which will connect the A40 at Travellers Rest with College Road providing direct access to the trunk road network for key employment sites at St David’s Park, Hywel Dda Health Board’s Hafan Derwen and the University of Wales Trinity St David’s Carmarthen campus.
It will also serve the new S4C headquarters Yr Egin, a major project for the Swansea Bay City Region, which will help the local economy by creating around 200 jobs as well as supporting the Welsh language.
Council Leader Emlyn Dole said: “I am delighted that officers have been able to negotiate this deal to purchase this land for the Carmarthen West development.
“Carmarthen West has been identified as a strategic site within the council’s Local Development Plan and is allocated for mixed use development including 1,100 new homes, a primary school, employment space, a small retail centre, open space and affordable housing.
“The first stage of works on the link road have been completed and discussions are underway with the contractor to return to site to complete the scheme.
“This is an important development for Carmarthen providing a significant economic boost to the area with huge benefits for the local community.”
The council is also progressing with the option of a Compulsory Purchase Order of other land in Carmarthen West.
