EXPRESSIONS of interest are being sought from companies for temporary accommodation options at Pembrey Country Park to cater for the thousands of visitors who want to stay overnight in Carmarthenshire for holidays and events.

Carmarthenshire County Council is looking at different ways to accommodate people visiting the county for holidays and events, providing jobs and boosting the local economy in Pembrey and Burry Port.

It comes as official tourism figures reveal that more people than ever before are staying in the county. Now contributing £260million to the local economy, the number of overnight stays rose by 3.6 per cent in 2016 compared to the previous year.

With caravan and camping demand in Pembrey Country Park exceeding current provision, one option is to seek out companies that can provide temporary accommodation facilities.

These non-permanent facilities would be required to protect the uniqueness of the park, be sensitive to its environment and ensure the whole park remains available for all.

If companies do come forward with expressions of interest and credible proposals, the council will set out how it plans to progress, develop and communicate any ideas.

Councillor Peter Hughes Griffiths, Executive Board Member for Culture, Sport and Tourism, said: “We’re looking for expressions of interest and ideas from companies who deliver temporary holiday accommodation to complement our current camping and caravanning offer at Pembrey Country Park. It is crucial for the local economy that we are able to meet the growing demand for places to stay in this wonderful county.”
