An independent review into the role of Sport Wales has been published by the Welsh Government.
Responding to its findings – which can be read in full here – Russell George AM, Welsh Conservative Shadow Secretary for Sport, said:
“We welcome the recommendations of the review which underscore the need for much closer working between Sport Wales and the Welsh Government.
“More strategic integration between the two bodies will ensure that the needs of wider society, as well as the needs of elite athletes, are sufficiently met. Historically, this has not happened – and I fear still isn’t happening.
“As an organisation which receives in the excess of £20m of public money annually, I remain astounded that these measures are not already in place.
“Sport Wales has for far too long been allowed to operate at an unacceptable distance from ministerial oversight, which has been to the detriment of the public to whom it exists to serve. That has to end.
“Serious questions remain over how the Sport Wales board became so dysfunctional, and I hope that the Minister will satisfy these concerns in her response to the report.”
