A WORKING group is being launched at the Royal Welsh Show today with the aim of tackling rural regeneration across Carmarthenshire.

The group will be led by Cllr Cefin Campbell, the county council’s Executive Board Member for Rural Affairs.

Its aim will be to consider the issues affecting rural parts of the county, and to to prepare a report with recommendations on how the council can take action to ensure regeneration over the coming years.

The cross-party working group, made up of representatives from the Plaid Cymru, Labour and Independent groups, will start on its work in September.

It will undertake research and consult with as wide a range as possible of stakeholders to identify the particular issues affecting Carmarthenshire’s rural communities.

The Rural Affairs Working Group will then identify actions the council can take in addressing those issues.

The Terms of Reference will be set at the group’s first meeting and it will consider issues such as economic regeneration (including jobs, training and skills), agriculture, public and private sector services, transport, tourism, education, housing, Brexit, broadband and mobile phone access, population movements, Welsh language, and any other matters that come up as discussions progress.

Cllr Campbell will meet with key representatives from organisations and rural interest groups during the Royal Welsh Show in order to inform the brief for the working group.

Cllr Campbell said: “Rural regeneration is a key priority for me as executive board member, and for the council administration.

“Carmarthenshire is a very rural county and each community has its own particular needs and issues, including the uncertainty facing them in the light of Brexit.

“I am proud to launch this working group which, I am sure, will deliver actions that can make a difference to our rural communities.

“I look forward to discussing this at the Royal Welsh Show to find out some facts I can take to the group when it meets in September.”

Further information on the Rural Affairs Working Group and how people with an interest in contributing to the discussion can get involved will be published in due course.
