It has been announced that the National Lottery has awarded £10.5m for the

re-development of Aberystwyth University’s Old College.

It is part of a £22m plan to turn the Grade I-listed building into a centre for heritage, learning and enterprise.

The Gothic building will be used as a centre for entrepreneurs and new businesses, as well as the site for a café and community rooms.

Aberystwyth graduate and Plaid Cymru Mid and West AM Simon Thomas said:

“As a former student and a current resident of Ceredigion I’m delighted to see a revival in the fortunes of Aberystwyth University’s Old College.

“When I was at university in the 1980s it was still being used for lectures. Entering the building you could feel the sense of history in the place and the Old College library was great to study because it was so quiet.”

“I met with Vice-Chancellor of the University, Elizabeth Treasure earlier this month with Ceredigion AM Elin Jones. I was excited to hear Elizabeth Treasure’s vision of a bilingual, residential university rooted in town. This renewal of the Old College is part of that vision.”

The work is due to be completed in time for the university’s 150th anniversary in 2022.

£10m i adfer Hen Goleg hanesyddol Aberystwyth

Cyhoeddodd y Loteri Cenedlaethol eu bod am roi £10.5m i adfer Hen Goleg Prifysgol Aberystwyth.

Dyma ran o gynllun £22m, fydd yn troi’r adeilad rhestredig Gradd 1 yn ganolfan dreftadaeth, addysg a menter.

Bydd yr adeilad Gothig yn cael ei ddefnyddio fel canolfan ar gyfer entrepreneuriaid a busnesau newydd, yn ogystal â safle ar gyfer caffi ac ystafelloedd cymunedol.

Dywedodd Simon Thomas AC Plaid Cymru dros y Canolbarth a’r Gorllewin:

“Fel cyn-fyfyriwr ac un sy’n byw yng yng Ngheredigion, rwyf wrth fy modd yn gweld adfywiad Hen Goleg Prifysgol Aberystwyth.

Roedd yr adeilad yn dal i gael ei ddefnyddio ar gyfer darlithoedd pan oeddwn yn  fyfyriwr yno yn yr 1980au. Wrth gerdded trwy ddrysau yr Hen Goleg, roedd ymdeimlad cryf o hanes ac roedd tawelwch y llyfrgell yn ei gwneud yn berffaith i astudio ynddi.”

“Cwrddais i ac Elin Jones, AC Ceredigion, ag Is-Ganghellor y Brifysgol, Elizabeth Treasure, yn gynharach yn y mis. Roedd yn gyffrous clywed am weledigaeth Elizabeth Treasure o Brifysgol breswyl, ddwyieithog â’i gwreiddiau yn y dref. Mae adfywiad yr Hen Goleg yn rhan o’r weledigaeth hon.”

Dylai’r gwaith fod wedi ei gwblhau mewn pryd i ddathlu 150 mlwyddiant y Brifysgol, yn 2022.
