Carmarthenshire pupils celebrate GCSE successes

PUPILS in Carmarthenshire are celebrating their success in the GCSE exams with results remaining above the Welsh average.

They include the new GCSE courses in English language, Welsh language, English literature, Welsh literature, mathematics numeracy, and mathematics.

Provisional figures highlight that 67 per cent of entries for all WJEC examinations were graded A* to C in Carmarthenshire, remaining above the Welsh average of 62.8%.

The results reflects the new qualifications with mathematics appearing to cause the greatest challenge.

Some 57.4 per cent of learners achieved the Level 2i indicator which represents 5 GCSEs grades A* to C, including a grade A*-C in English or Welsh first language and mathematics or mathematics numeracy.

As there has seen a significant increase in the number of Year 10 students entered before they have completed their full programme of study, the independent regulator Qualifications Wales has stated that “reliable conclusions cannot be drawn from direct comparisons between results in summer 2017 and summer 2016…”

Cllr Glynog Davies, Executive Board member for Education and Children’s Services, congratulated the pupils.

“Our pupils continue to achieve many successes in their GCSE examinations following their considerable efforts, providing them with solid foundations as they move on to their future learning and career opportunities,” Cllr Davies said.

“I sincerely thank all of our schools for the support that they have provided throughout the years, professionally adapting to the changes in the GCSE qualifications this year.”

Interim Director for Education and Children’s Services Mr Gareth Morgans said the results highlighted how dedicated school staff ensured that all pupils accessed a stimulating range of educational experiences.

“During this time of national educational reform the results represent the positive impact of working together across Carmarthenshire and the ERW region, working in effective partnership in order to achieve high expectations and standards,” Mr Morgans said. 

“We’d like to offer our warmest congratulations to all pupils, their families and school staff for their ongoing commitment and effort towards their learning.

“As the new examinations are embedded across Wales we will continue to work effectively alongside our schools so that our young people access the skills and qualifications needed in order for them to achieve their goals.”
