Stop Means Stop reminder to motorists

MOTORISTS in Carmarthenshire are being reminded to stop when signalled by our school crossing patrol officers.

With the start of the new school term in September, the council’s road safety team is launching its annual ‘Stop Means Stop’ campaign.

When a school crossing patrol displays their stop sign, motorists must stop.

If they don’t, they are breaking the law and will be reported. They face a £1,000 fine and a minimum of three penalty points on their licence.

School crossing patrol officers are employed primarily to help children cross the road safely on their way to and from school.

They are allowed to stop traffic for anyone wishing to cross the road so long as they are operating at their approved site and within their authorised hours of duty.

Executive Board Member for the Environment, Cllr Hazel Evans, said: “School crossing patrol officers have a very important role to play in keeping our community safe.

“The message is simple. All road users must stop when a school crossing patrol officer asks them to do so.
“Drivers should allow a little extra journey time if their route takes them through a patrolled area – and be prepared to slow down and stop when requested to do so.”

Stop Means Stop

Wherever you know a school crossing patrol operates, please give them every consideration and assistance by:

·         Parking well away from them (they need to see and be seen by approaching traffic).

·         Always reducing your speed and being prepared to stop

·         Obeying their instructions when signalled to stop

·         Giving them time to cross the children safely and return back to the pavement.

Sign upside down – not ready to cross children.

Sign sideways – barrier to stop children crossing.

Sign held up high – ready to cross children. Vehicles must be prepared to stop.

Sign extended out – all vehicles must stop.

Atgoffa gyrwyr bod Stop yn Golygu Stop

Mae gyrwyr yn Sir Gaerfyrddin yn cael eu hatgoffa i stopio pan ofynnir iddynt wneud hynny gan hebryngwyr ysgol.

Gyda’r tymor ysgol newydd yn dechrau ym mis Medi, mae tîm diogelwch ffyrdd y Cyngor yn lansio ei ymgyrch flynyddol ‘Mae Stop yn Golygu Stop’.

Pan fo hebryngydd ysgol yn arddangos yr arwydd stop, mae’n rhaid i fodurwyr stopio.

Os nad ydynt yn stopio, maent yn torri’r gyfraith a rhoddir gwybod i’r heddlu amdanynt. Gallant gael dirwy o £1,000 ac o leiaf dri phwynt cosb ar eu trwydded.

Caiff Hebryngwyr Ysgol eu cyflogi yn bennaf er mwyn helpu plant i groesi’r ffordd yn ddiogel ar eu ffordd i’r ysgol ac ar eu ffordd adref o’r ysgol.

Mae ganddynt yr hawl i stopio’r traffig ar gyfer unrhyw un sy’n dymuno croesi’r ffordd cyhyd â’u bod yn gweithredu yn eu safle awdurdodedig ac o fewn eu horiau gwaith awdurdodedig.

Dywedodd y Cynghorydd Hazel Evans, yr Aelod o’r Bwrdd Gweithredol dros yr Amgylchedd: “Mae gan hebryngwyr ysgol rôl bwysig iawn i’w chwarae er mwyn cadw ein cymuned yn ddiogel.

“Mae’r neges yn syml. Rhaid i bob defnyddiwr ffordd stopio pan fydd hebryngydd ysgol yn gofyn iddynt wneud hynny.
“Dylai gyrwyr ganiatáu ychydig mwy o amser ar gyfer eu siwrnai os yw’r daith yn mynd drwy ardal sy’n cael ei phatrolio a dylent fod yn barod i arafu ac i stopio pan fydd hebryngydd yn gofyn iddynt wneud hynny.”

Mae Stop yn Golygu Stop

Ble bynnag yr ydych yn gwybod fod hebryngydd ysgol yn gweithio, rhowch bob ystyriaeth a chymorth iddo/iddi trwy wneud y canlynol:

·         Parcio’n ddigon pell oddi wrthynt (mae angen iddynt weld y traffig sy’n dod, a chael eu gweld gan y traffig).

·         Arafu bob amser a bod yn barod i stopio

·         Ufuddhau i’w cyfarwyddiadau pan fyddant yn rhoi arwydd i chi stopio

·         Rhoi amser iddynt groesi’r plant yn ddiogel a dychwelyd i’r pafin.

Yr arwydd ben i waered – ddim yn barod i groesi’r plant.

Yr arwydd ar ei ochr – rhwystr i atal plant rhag croesi.

Yr arwydd yn cael ei ddal i fyny’n uchel – yn barod i groesi’r plant. Rhaid i gerbydau fod yn barod i stopio.

Yr arwydd wedi’i estyn allan – rhaid i bob cerbyd stopio.
