A site visit to mark the completion of demolition work and the start of a major housing and commercial development took place this week at the former Glan Afan School Site in Port Talbot.

Among key partners who came together to share this significant milestone were Councillors and Officers from Neath Port Talbot Council, representatives from the Welsh Government, Coastal Housing Group and Jehu Project Services.

Jehu Project Services have now completed demolition works at the former school site. All former school buildings have now been demolished with the exception of the iconic red brick façade, which is being retained within the development. Once completed, the redevelopment project will include a mix of residential and commercial units.

Glan Afan Comprehensive School closed its doors for the final time back in July 2016, with pupils transferring to Ysgol Bae Baglan. The move was part of Neath
Port Talbot Council’s Strategic Schools Improvement Programme.

The £7.2m investment is one of a number of projects in Port Talbot’s Regeneration programme, delivered under the Welsh Government’s Vibrant and Viable Places initiative. The project will also benefit from a Social Housing Grant from the Welsh Government. The site will be redeveloped by Coastal Housing Group and will provide 47 new homes and commercial space fronting Station Road. Completion of the development is targeted for the end of 2018.

Leader of Neath Port Talbot Council, Councillor Rob Jones, former pupil of Glan Afan said: “The completion of demolition at the Glan Afan site is another important milestone in the Regeneration of Port Talbot town centre. The development is
in a prominent location in the main shopping area of the town and the creation of new accommodation and commercial space will reinvigorate this part of Port Talbot.

We are therefore excited that construction is now commencing on site, which will provide much needed housing and amenities for local people.”
Cabinet Secretary for Communities and Children, Carl Sargeant said:

“This is an important stage in the development of the Glan Afan site, which is being delivered with support from the Welsh Government through the Vibrant and Viable Places programme and the Social Housing Grant. It is providing much needed affordable homes, as well as improving the area for new and existing residents. It is an excellent example of how a housing development can benefit the whole community.”

At the event, Gareth Davies, Director of Development at Coastal Housing Group said: “With demolition complete, we are now one step closer to making the development plans a reality.

“The additional social housing created at this development will provide great benefits and quality homes for local people in the community, with commercial space creating job opportunities and encouraging businesses to the area”.
