A Local Bus Service For Local Needs

Sean Rees, Llanelli Town Councillor for Glanymor Ward recently attended a public meeting to request that consideration be given to the provision of a local bus service to serve the residents of Machynys and The Links.

At the meeting, residents held a Question and Answer session with Councillor Rees.

It was stated how there are now approximately 600 homes within the new developments that have been built in recent years. It was noted that whilst car ownership has increased, transport investment generally across the UK has lagged behind other public sector investment and especially so here in Wales.

Residents were very keen to work constructively with the County Council and local operator First Cymru to look at ways to develop good and sustainable transport links. Many also felt that with the plans for a new Wellness and Life Science Village nearby that this would also strengthen the need for an enhanced service locally.

Councillor Rees is in discussions with Transport Services at the County Council. He has also written to First Cymru to ask them to explore every avenue in order to ensure there are co-ordinated, integrated services with good connections and a reliability in delivery.

Councillor Rees said:

“A bus service for this area will make Llanelli Town Centre and Trostre more accessible for residents. It would also lead to a number of community benefits with opportunities to access work, shopping, transport connections as well as attend medical appointments, educational establishments and leisure facilities.

“I was pleased that the meeting was well attended, there is great demand from residents which needs to be supported. It was agreed by all present to now investigate the practicality of extending the current L1 bus service. This circular route already serves part of the ward with the exception of the new developments.”
