PAUL LIVINGSTONE WINS £150 FOR HIS MICROBIOLOGY POSTER

Paul Livingstone, a resident of Carmarthen, won the poster prize for
the medical microbiology category at this year’s IBMS Congress, the
biggest dedicated biomedical science conference for students,
professionals and companies in the UK.

Paul is a biomedical scientist and specialises in medical
microbiology. He works in the pathology department at West Wales
General Hospital and is a postgraduate research student at the
Institute of Biological, Environmental & Rural Sciences at Aberystwyth
University. The poster is entitled ‘Predatory profile of
myxobacteria against clinically relevant organisms’.

Biomedical scientists like Paul diagnose disease and evaluate the
effectiveness of treatments through the analysis of fluids and tissue
samples, handling over 150 million samples every year. In the UK
alone, pathologists are involved in over 70% of diagnoses in the NHS.

The posters were judged by a panel of specialists in biomedical
science and Paul was one of ten poster winners who impressed the
judges.

IBMS President Ian Sturdgess commented, “We were very impressed
with the posters presented at this year’s Congress and I am
delighted to award the winners with a well-deserved prize for their
hard work.”
