Residents living in Carmarthenshire are being encouraged to call 111 instead of the old NHS Direct number if they need to see their GP Out of Hours.
Anyone who is registered with a Carmarthenshire GP can dial NHS 111 for free to access their Out of Hours service and NHS Direct Wales.
The number was launched in Carmarthenshire in May to make it easier for people to get the advice, support or treatment that is right for them.
People calling the number will firstly speak to a specially-trained call handler who will ask a series of questions.
This will allow the service’s experienced healthcare professionals – nurses and, during evenings, weekends and bank holidays, GPs and pharmacists – to prioritise calls so the most seriously ill are treated first.
Depending on the urgency of their condition, callers will get a call back from a nurse, doctor or pharmacist advising them what to do.
If they need to see a GP out of hours, they will be asked to attend one of the primary care centres within Carmarthenshire.
Crucially, call takers are trained to recognise when there is a risk of a life- threatening condition, so people who dial 111 but really need an ambulance will be connected immediately to the emergency ambulance service.
The 999 number should only be called in the event of a life-threatening emergency. If it isn’t an emergency but is nevertheless urgent, then people in Carmarthenshire will be able to call 111 instead.
Joe Teape, Director of Operations and Deputy Chief Executive at Hywel Dda University Health Board, said: “Historically if you needed to see an Out of Hours GP in Carmarthenshire you would have phoned your local surgery to be put through to the service. However, since the launch of NHS 111 we’ve seen a real shift in the way that these calls have been managed across the county, with more patients being directed to the right service for their needs. That’s why we would like to encourage as many people as possible to dial 111 if you need an Out of Hours GP, which also has the advantage of being free to call and easy to remember.”

Mae trigolion Sir Gâr yn cael eu hannog i ffonio 111 yn lle hen rif Galw Iechyd Cymru os oes arnynt angen gweld Meddyg Teulu tu allan i oriau.
Gall unrhyw un sydd wedi cofrestru gyda Meddyg Teulu yn Sir Gâr ddeialu 111 er mwyn cael mynediad am ddim i’w gwasanaeth Tu Allan i Oriau a Galw Iechyd Cymru.
Caiff y rhif ffon ei lansio yng Nghaerfyrddin yn mis Mai i wneud yn hawdd i bobl yn y sir gael cymorth gofal iechyd brys os byddant yn teimlo’n sâl, neu os bydd eu meddygfa eu hunain ar gau.
Bydd pobl sy’n ffonio 111 yn siarad yn gyntaf â derbyniwr galwadau sydd wedi’i hyfforddi’n arbennig, a fydd yn gofyn cyfres o gwestiynau.
Bydd hyn yn galluogi gweithwyr gofal iechyd proffesiynol profiadol y gwasanaeth – nyrsys ac, yn ystod nosweithiau, penwythnosau a gwyliau banc, meddygon teulu a fferyllwyr – i flaenoriaethu galwadau fel bod y rheiny sydd fwyaf difrifol wael yn cael eu trin yn gyntaf.
Gan ddibynnu ar ba mor ddifrifol yw eu cyflwr, bydd cleifion yn cael galwad yn ôl gan nyrs, meddyg neu fferyllydd, a fydd yn dweud wrthynt beth i’w wneud.
Os bydd angen iddynt weld meddyg teulu y tu allan i oriau, bydd gofyn iddynt fynd i un o’r canolfannau gofal sylfaenol yn Sir Gaerfyrddin.
Yn hollbwysig, mae’r derbynwyr galwadau wedi’u hyfforddi i adnabod pan fo bygythiad i fywyd. Felly, bydd pobl sy’n ffonio 111 ond y mae arnynt angen ambiwlans yn cael eu trosglwyddo’n syth i’r gwasanaeth ambiwlans brys.
Dim ond mewn argyfwng sy’n bygwth bywyd y dylid ffonio 999. Os nad yw’n argyfwng, ond serch hynny mae’n achos brys, bydd pobl yn Sir Gaerfyrddin yn gallu ffonio 111 yn lle hynny.
Dywedodd Joe Teape, Cyfarwyddwr Gweithrediadau a Dirprwy Brif Weithredwr Bwrdd iechyd Prifysgol Hywel Dda: “Gynt, os oedd arnoch angen gweld Meddyg Teulu tu allan i oriau yn Sir Gaerfyrddin byddech wedi ffonio eich meddygfa a chael eich trosglwyddo i’r gwasanaeth. Fodd bynnag, ers lansio GIG 111, rydym wedi gweld newid mawr yn y modd y mae’r galwadau hyn yn cael eu rheoli ar draws y sir, gyda mwy o gleifion yn cael eu cyfeirio at y gwasanaeth cywir i ddiwallu eu anghenion. Dyna pam y dymunwn annog cynifer o bobl â phosibl i ddeialu 111 os oes angen Meddyg Teulu tu allan i oriau. Mae hefyd yn fantais bod y rhif am ddim ac yn hawdd i’w gofio.”
