Residents smash recycling targets three years early

RECYCLING rates in Carmarthenshire have rocketed, beating a statutory recycling target three years early.
Figures released by Welsh Government today show Carmarthenshire residents are recycling over 66% of their rubbish, surpassing a target set for the year 2019/20 of 64%.
It also shows an increase on three per cent in the last 12 months meaning people in Carmarthenshire are recycling more and sending less rubbish to landfill.
During 2016/17, more than 83,500 tonnes of household waste was collected with just over four per cent sent to landfill.
The council’s executive board member for environment, Cllr Hazel Evans, said: “I’m thrilled that recycling rates in Carmarthenshire have once again increased. The fact that we have already beaten our target three years early is testament to the residents of Carmarthenshire for doing their bit, separating their waste and ensuring the majority of it can be recycled and used again.”
The Welsh Government has set statutory targets for recycling with a 70% target by 2025 and to be a zero waste (100% recycling) nation by 2050. Local authorities that fail to meet the targets could face large financial penalties. The Landfill Allowances Scheme (LAS) limits the amount of biodegradable municipal waste – such as paper, cardboard and kitchen scraps – that councils are allowed to send to landfill. If councils exceed these limits, it can lead to fines.
Cllr Evans added: “We have a 70% recycling target to reach by 2024/25 so it is important that we continue to keep up the excellent work. We could not have achieved this figure without the cooperation of the residents, however, if we can do a little bit more then we will hopefully meet our target.”
There are four main recycling centres and more than 170 recycling banks across the county.
Eleven waste and tyre amnesties have been scheduled in 2017/2018 for residents who do not live near to a household waste recycling centre.
A new garden waste collection service was introduced earlier this year and provides residents with a 240-litre wheeled bin which emptied every two weeks.
An established door knocking team is proactively working within local communities offering advice and support on how to and recycle as much as possible engaging with residents and community groups to raise awareness on the importance of disposing of their household waste in the correct manner.

Trigolion yn curo targedau ailgylchu tri blynedd yn gynnar

MAE cyfraddau ailgylchu yn Sir Gaerfyrddin wedi cynyddu’n sylweddol, gan guro targed ailgylchu statudol dair blynedd yn gynnar.
Mae ffigurau a gyhoeddwyd gan Lywodraeth Cymru heddiw yn dangos bod trigolion Sir Gaerfyrddin yn ailgylchu dros 66% o’u sbwriel, gan ragori ar darged a bennwyd ar gyfer y flwyddyn 2019/20, sef 64%.
Mae hefyd yn dangos cynnydd o 3% yn y 12 mis diwethaf sy’n golygu bod pobl yn Sir Gaerfyrddin yn ailgylchu mwy ac yn anfon llai o sbwriel i safleoedd tirlenwi.
Casglwyd mwy na 83,500 tunnell o wastraff y cartref ac anfonwyd ychydig dros 4% i safleoedd tirlenwi yn 2016/17.
Dywedodd y Cynghorydd Hazel Evans, yr Aelod o Fwrdd Gweithredol y Cyngor dros yr Amgylchedd: “Rwyf wrth fy modd bod y cyfraddau ailgylchu yn Sir Gaerfyrddin wedi cynyddu unwaith eto. Mae’r ffaith ein bod eisoes wedi cyrraedd ein targed dair blynedd yn gynnar yn brawf bod trigolion Sir Gaerfyrddin yn gwneud eu rhan, gan wahanu eu gwastraff a sicrhau bod y rhan fwyaf ohono yn gallu cael ei ailgylchu a’i ddefnyddio eto.”
Mae Llywodraeth Cymru wedi gosod targedau statudol ar gyfer ailgylchu sef 70% erbyn 2025 ac i fod yn genedl ddiwastraff (ailgylchu 100%) erbyn 2050. Gallai awdurdodau lleol sy’n methu â chyrraedd y targedau wynebu dirwyon ariannol mawr. Mae’r Cynllun Lwfansau Tirlenwi yn cyfyngu ar y gwastraff trefol bioddiraddadwy – fel papur, cardbord a sborion cegin – y caniateir i gynghorau eu hanfon i safleoedd tirlenwi. Os bydd cynghorau’n cynhyrchu mwy o wastraff na’r terfynau hyn, fe allant gael dirwy.
Dywedodd y Cyng. Evans: “Mae gennym darged ailgylchu o 70% i’w gyrraedd erbyn 2024/25 felly mae’n bwysig ein bod yn dal ati â’r gwaith da. Ni allem fod wedi cyrraedd y ffigur hwn heb gydweithrediad y trigolion, ond os gallwn wneud ychydig yn fwy, yna gobeithio byddwn yn cyrraedd ein targed.”
Mae pedair prif ganolfan ailgylchu a mwy na 170 o fanciau ailgylchu ledled y Sir.
Mae 11 o amnestau gwastraff a theiars wedi cael eu trefnu yn 2017/2018 ar gyfer pobl nad ydynt yn byw ger canolfan ailgylchu gwastraff y cartref. Cyflwynwyd gwasanaeth casglu gwastraff gardd newydd yn gynharach eleni sy’n rhoi whilfin 240 litr i breswylwyr a gaiff ei wagio bob pythefnos. Mae tîm sefydledig yn gweithio mewn cymunedau lleol er mwyn ymweld â thrigolion a chynnig cyngor a chymorth ar sut i ailgylchu cymaint â phosibl ac mae’r tîm hwn yn ymgysylltu â phreswylwyr a grwpiau cymunedol i gynyddu ymwybyddiaeth o bwysigrwydd gwaredu eu gwastraff y cartref yn y modd cywir.
