Steel frame goes up at Ysgol Newydd Briton Ferry

Work at the new Ysgol Newydd Briton Ferry primary school in Briton Ferry has reached an exciting point as the steel frame goes up, giving a glimpse of the scale of the transformation taking place.

During a site visit by Councillors of Neath Port Talbot Council, contractor Kier provided an update on the construction progress of Ysgol Newydd Briton Ferry. To date, significant progress has been made on the construction of the new school.

The new £7m primary school is due to open its doors in autumn 2018. The school will be built on the site of the former Cwrt Sart Comprehensive School and will include a multi-use games areas and hard and soft play areas for different age groups.

The primary school will have a capacity for 420 full-time pupils and a nursery for75 children attending part-time.

Councillor Peter Rees, Cabinet Member for Education, Skills and Culture said: “This momentous event marks yet another key milestone in the Council’s Strategic School Improvement Programme which aims to raise school standards and enhance the quality of the learning environment by providing the right schools in the right places,and that they are fit for 21st Century learners”.

The Council’s Strategic School Improvement Programme will see a multi-million pound investment in Neath Port Talbot schools, of which approximately 50% will be grant funded by the Welsh Government.

This latest development will bring the total investment in new school builds in the county borough to over £134m with some new schools already completed and operational and others underway.

Jason Taylor, Operations Director, Kier Construction Western and Wales, said: “We’re delighted to be working with Neath Port Talbot Council to deliver this important facility which will benefit both the pupils and the Neath Port Talbot area. This project will be a good learning initiative for pupils from local schools and colleges who wish to enter the construction industry.

“Throughout the construction process, we will be working with our local supply chain partners to provide employment and up-skilling opportunities for the community. We have already employed two local people and an apprentice to work on the project with the opportunity for more vocational apprentices to be placed.”

Mae gwaith ar ysgol gynradd newydd Llansawel yn Llansawel wedi cyrraedd pwynt cyffrous wrth i’r ffrâm ddur gael ei chodi, gan roi cip olwg ar y trawsnewidiad sydd ar waith.

Yn ystod ymweliad safle gan gynghorwyr Castell-nedd Port Talbot, rhoddodd y contractwr, Kier, y diweddaraf am hynt y gwaith adeiladu yn Ysgol Newydd Llansawel. Cafwyd cynnydd sylweddol hyd yn hyn yn y gwaith i adeiladu’r ysgol newydd

Disgwylir i’r ysgol gynradd newydd gwerth £7m agor ei drysau yn ystod Hydref 2018. Caiff yr ysgol ei hadeiladu ar hen safle Ysgol Uwchradd Cwrt Sart a bydd yn cynnwys ardaloedd gemau aml-ddefnydd a chwarae meddal i grwpiau oedran gwahanol.

Bydd lle yn yr ysgol i 420 o ddisgyblion amser llawn ynghyd â dosbarth meithrin y gall 75 o blant ei fynychu’n rhan-amser.

Meddai’r Cynghorydd Peter Rees, Aelod y Cabinet dros Addysg, Sgiliau a Diwylliant, “Mae’r digwyddiad pwysig hwn yn nodi carreg filltir allweddol arall yn Rhaglen Strategol Gwella Ysgolion y cyngor sy’n ceisio codi safonau ysgolion a gwella ansawdd yr amgylchedd dysgu drwy ddarparu’r ysgolion iawn yn y mannau iawn, ac sy’n addas ar gyfer dysgwyr yr 21ain ganrif.”

Gyda Rhaglen Strategol Gwella Ysgolion y cyngor, buddsoddir miliynau o bunnoedd yn ysgolion Castell-nedd Port Talbot, y bydd 50% ohono’n cael ei ariannu drwy grantiau Llywodraeth Cymru.

Bydd y datblygiad diweddaraf hwn yn golygu bod cyfanswm o dros £134m wedi’i fuddsoddi mewn ysgolion newydd yn y fwrdeistref sirol, gyda rhai ysgolion newydd eisoes wedi’u cwblhau ac yn weithredol ac eraill yn mynd rhagddynt.

Meddai Jason Taylor, Cyfarwyddwr Gweithredoedd Kier Construction Western and Wales, “Rydym wrth ein bod yn gweithio gyda Chyngor Castell-nedd Port Talbot i gyflwyno’r cyfleuster pwysig hwn a fydd o fudd i’r disgyblion ac ardal Castell-nedd Port Talbot. Bydd y prosiect hwn yn fenter ddysgu dda i ddisgyblion o ysgolion a cholegau lleol sydd am weithio yn y diwydiant adeiladu.

“Trwy gydol y broses adeiladu, byddwn yn gweithio gyda’n partneriaid cadwyn gyflenwi lleol i ddarparu cyflogaeth a chyfleoedd gwella sgiliau i’r gymuned. Rydym eisoes wedi cyflogi dau berson lleol a phrentis i weithio ar y prosiect, a bydd cyfleoedd i leoli mwy o brentisiaid.”
