Carmarthenshire Youth Conference launches new mental health campaign

THIS year’s annual Youth Conference is the setting to launch a new mental health campaign set up by young people in Carmarthenshire.

Garnant teenager Harriet Alsop-Bingham will launch ‘Stori Harriet’ on behalf of the Youth Council.
‘Stori Harriet’ encourages people to pledge to start a conversation.

Harriet, aged 16, has faced personal difficulties and has shown strength and courage in overcoming them. She said: “Mental health is everyone’s business and I hope that Stori Harriet will help people whether it be family members, school staff or someone you’ve met on the street. It’s important to check they are ok as starting a conversation could change a life.”

The campaign will be launched by Cllr Glynog Davies, Executive Board Member for Education who will sign the first copy of Stori Harriet’s Pledge at the conference. He said: “Harriet has an inspiring story to tell which will I’m sure give encouragement and support to others. I congratulate Harriet and the Youth Council for bringing this important and difficult topic to the forefront,” he said.

“I hope that people will support and sign Harriet’s pledge.”

Over 100 young people aged 11-25 from schools, colleges and youth projects across Carmarthenshire are expected to attend this year’s conference in Parc y Scarlets on November 22 from 9.30am-2.30pm.
Entitled ‘It’s A Bad Day, Not A Bad Life’ the conference’s theme is the Mental Health of Young People.
The conference is organised in partnership by Carmarthenshire Youth Council and Carmarthenshire County Council’s Participation and Children’s Rights Team.

During the event young people will listen to speeches and take part in workshops and discussions around Mental Health with other young people, decision makers and professionals from the health and education sector.

Carmarthenshire Youth Council member and Bryngwyn School pupil Freya Sperinck, aged 15, said: “The aim of the conference is to raise awareness of mental health issues facing young people today but more importantly letting young people know what they can do to help their own mental health and the mental health of others.”

BYDD yr ymgyrch newydd ar gyfer iechyd meddwl, a sefydlwyd gan bobl ifanc Sir Gaerfyrddin, yn cael ei lansio yn y Gynhadledd Ieuenctid flynyddol eleni.

Bydd Harriet Alsop-Bingham, sydd yn ei harddegau ac yn byw yng Ngarnant, yn lansio ‘Stori Harriet’ ar ran y Cyngor Ieuenctid.

Mae ‘Stori Harriet’ yn annog pobl i wneud addewid i ddechrau sgwrs ag eraill.
Mae Harriet, sy’n 16 oed, wedi dangos cryfder a dewrder i oresgyn anawsterau personol. Dywedodd: “Mae Iechyd Meddwl yn fater i bawb ac rwyf yn gobeithio y bydd Stori Harriet yn helpu pobl, p’un a ydynt yn aelodau o deulu, staff ysgol neu rywun rydych wedi dod ar ei draws ar y stryd. Mae’n bwysig holi pobl ynghylch sut y maen nhw’n teimlo, oherwydd gallai dechrau sgwrs newid bywyd.”

Bydd yr ymgyrch yn cael ei lansio gan y Cynghorydd Glynog Davies, yr Aelod o’r Bwrdd Gweithredol dros Addysg, a fydd yn llofnodi copi cyntaf Addewid Stori Harriet yn y gynhadledd. Dywedodd: “Mae gan Harriet stori ysbrydoledig iawn i’w hadrodd ac rwyf yn sicr y bydd yn rhoi anogaeth a chymorth i eraill. Rwyf yn llongyfarch Harriet a’r Cyngor Ieuenctid am hoelio sylw ar y pwnc pwysig ac anodd hwn,” dywedodd.

“Rwyf yn gobeithio y bydd pobl yn cefnogi ac yn llofnodi addewid Harriet.”
Disgwylir i dros 100 o bobl ifanc rhwng 11 a 25 oed o ysgolion, colegau a phrosiectau ieuenctid ledled Sir Gaerfyrddin fod yn bresennol yn y gynhadledd eleni ym Mharc y Scarlets ar 22 Tachwedd o 9.30am tan 2.30pm.

‘Diwrnod gwael, dim bywyd gwael’ yw teitl y gynhadledd, a’i thema yw Iechyd Meddwl Pobl Ifanc.
Caiff y gynhadledd ei threfnu ar y cyd gan Gyngor Ieuenctid Sir Gâr a Thîm Cyfranogiad a Hawliau Plant Cyngor Sir Caerfyrddin.

Yn ystod y digwyddiad, bydd pobl ifanc yn gwrando ar areithiau ac yn cymryd rhan mewn gweithdai a thrafodaethau ynghylch Iechyd Meddwl â phobl ifanc eraill, pobl sy’n gwneud penderfyniadau a phobl broffesiynol o’r sector iechyd ac addysg.

Dywedodd Freya Sperinck, 15 oed sy’n aelod o Gyngor Ieuenctid Sir Gâr ac yn ddisgybl yn Ysgol Bryngwyn:
“Nod y gynhadledd yw codi ymwybyddiaeth o faterion iechyd meddwl sy’n wynebu pobl ifanc heddiw, ac yn bwysicach fyth, dysgu’r bobl ifanc am yr hyn y gallant ei wneud i helpu eu hiechyd meddwl eu hunain ac iechyd meddwl pobl eraill.”
