Budget presents an opportunity for Wales

The Welsh Liberal Democrats have called on the Chancellor to deliver a budget that makes the most of the opportunities available to Wales and delivers on the Conservative’s election promise to deliver equitable growth across the UK.

The Welsh Liberal Democrats have today claimed that the budget must include support for the Swansea Tidal Lagoon, an ambitious North Wales Growth Deal, fair funding for Wales post-Brexit, and should immediately stop the rollout of Universal Credit and end the public sector pay cap if Wales is not to be left behind.

Welsh Lib Dem Leader Jane Dodds commented;

“This budget presents a real opportunity for Wales, I only hope the Chancellor is bold enough to take it. This budget is a chance to make Wales a world leader in Tidal energy, to make North Wales an economic powerhouse and to ensure Wales has the tools to deliver economic prosperity for all once we leave the EU.

The Welsh Liberal Democrats have the ambition Wales needs, does the Chancellor?”

“Wales has had more than enough of austerity. As one of the most deprived regions of the UK and even the EU, Wales has suffered more than most. The continued rollout of Universal Credit will worsen child poverty and increase homelessness, whilst the public sector pay gap has left public sector workers who devote their lives to saving ours reliant on food banks to survive. The Chancellor must end the roll out of Universal Credit and end the public sector pay cap.”

“Having already abandoned their commitment to electrify the South Wales Mainline to Swansea whilst funding infrastructure project after infrastructure project for South East England, the UK Government must make good its promise to deliver growth for the whole of the UK and open up opportunities for Wales.”
