Tenby by winter: what to eat, drink, see and do

Often wrongly regarded as one of the lesser lights of West Wales, Tenby is one of the more up-and-coming hives of activity in Pembrokeshire, with a host of things to do, see and experience over the coming months. Whether you want to break away from the Tenby local or simply head out to a different town for the weekend, it’s well worth trying something a little new.

The sun has disappeared for another few months, so a leisurely stroll along Castle Beach may well be one for the hardcore only. For those wanting to keep the cold at bay and stay indoors, The Salt Cellar is just around the corner and is a relatively new restaurant that has earned rave reviews from locals and visitors alike. Open for lunch service from 12 until 2:30 and for dinner from 6 until 9:30, it is a genuine and down-to-earth restaurant bar with a stunning terrace for those crisp winter afternoons.

Who knew the Pembrokeshire area was such a sushi hotspot? The Sushi Legend is a highly-rated eatery just outside Tenby that Japanese food enthusiasts travel from miles around to experience. Despite the increasing popularity of Japanese cuisine, many people still don’t know the difference between sushi and sashimi. The former is an umbrella term that includes sashimi, maki and more, while sashimi specifically is slices of super-fresh raw fish served with soy sauce, as we read on Deliveroo.

Another bar restaurant worth trying if you haven’t already is the Billycan. Based on Lower Frog Street, it is now very much the central hub of Tenby’s social scene, offering reasonably priced craft ales and pub grub hugely popular with visitors and locals alike. Of course, one famed and specific activity in Tenby is their annual Boxing Day swim, which typically takes place between 10am and 4pm. Another relative newcomer is the Babi-Bleau Creative Cafe, where pit-stoppers can refuel whilst checking out a handsome showing of local art. They make beautiful children’s clothing and gifts, making it a worthwhile shopping stop-off, too, and that’s not all, of course. Patrons can get involved themselves, getting their fingers sticky in craft activities as well as the sumptuous sticky buns!
