Council service recognised by leading newspaper

A 24-hour information, advice and assistance service run by Carmarthenshire County Council has been recognised by one of the UK’s leading newspapers.

Dewis Sir Gar was named as runner up in The Guardian’s Public Service Awards 2017 for its success in offering a single point of access for social care enquiries.

With just one call people can get the help they need from a team of skilled call handelers who are supported by a team of professionals such as social workers, occupational therapists, district nurses and physiotherapists.

Singled out in the newspaper, The Guardian writes: “Branded ‘trailblazing’ by an independent audit, Carmarthenshire County Council’s Dewis Sir Gar has quickly become a proven success. The service means that frontline staff are better able to filter enquiries, directing the most vulnerable clients to where they can seek help.”

The tailored service available in Welsh and English offers assistance on a wide range of issues including mental health, disabilities, safeguarding, bereavement and wellbeing for all ages.

It is available seven days a week, 365 days a year and can be accessed by anyone needing support and guidance including individuals, family members, neighbours and friends.

The council’s executive board member for social care, Cllr Jane Tremlett said: “We’re absolutely delighted to be recognised by one of the top newspapers in the country.  It can get quite frustrating when people need help but get passed around departments for one reason or another. With our newly launched Dewis Sir Gar, one phone call is all it takes to get the support someone needs.”
