New Integrated Transport Hub in Port Talbot Open
A project to create a new integrated transport hub in Port Talbot to encourage more sustainable travel has successfully been completed.
The Transport Hub centralises main transport links including Port Talbot Parkway station, a new bus terminal, cycle facilities, a taxi rank and drop-off and pick-up bays in a largely pedestrianised concourse, providing easier access for all to employment and residential areas in and around the town. The Councilâs new ÂŁ5.6mTransport Hub complements the ÂŁ11.3m redevelopment of Port Talbot Parkway Railway Station by Network Rail in 2016 and forms part of the Councilâs wider Regeneration Programme. The scheme has been funded by the Welsh Government through both its Local Transport Fund and Vibrant & Viable Places funding, which has been matched by EU funds to complete the project.
The Transport Hub does not replace Port Talbot Bus Station where normal services will continue.
The Transport Hub will be fully commissioned over the next few months with the introduction of Bus Services and Taxiâs from early January 2018. First Cymru services will initially include the X1, X3, X4, 87and 88. In addition, Ridgeways will operate service 66.In total, there will be in excess of 160 departures per day (Monday to Saturday) with reduced services on Sundays.
Leader of Neath Port Talbot Council, Cllr Rob Jonessaid: âThe new transport hub has brought together Bus, Rail, Taxi, Cycle and Pedestrian facilities in a safe modern environment that has created a vibrant gateway for Port Talbot town. Improvements such as these are essential in supporting businesses and stimulating the local economy.
âIâd like to thank the contractors for their professionalism and for keeping the community informed throughout the worksâ.
Cabinet Secretary for the Economy and Transport Ken Skates AM said:
âThis fantastic new facility will help to reduce journey times for people locally and encourage more people to let the bus and the train take the strain.â
Minister for Housing and Regeneration Rebecca Evans AM said: âThanks to this investment Port Talbot now has a more inviting and welcoming gateway, which is enabling more people from the surrounding communities to access opportunities to learn, work and socialise in the town.â
Mark Bowen, Managing Director for Andrew Scott Ltd said: âWe wish to thank the public and other major stakeholders for their patience whilst we completed this challenging scheme. The Hub is essential in delivering modern transport links and securing economic development in the area. As a well-established local contractor, we are proud to have deliveredsuch a successful scheme for Port Talbotâ.
The project has brought many benefits to the community, including opportunities for local suppliers and contractors, generating employment and training for local people.
Further planned resurfacing works to Heilbronn Way and Oakwood Road / Lane will be completed in the New Year.
