Plaid Cymru AM Simon Thomas called on the Welsh Government to trigger the EU Continuity Bill in the National Assembly for Wales to ensure there is no Brexit power grab from the Westminster Government.

He asked a topical question in the Senedd chamber following the failure of the Conservative Westminster Government to amend the European Union Withdrawl Bill as promised in the House of Commons.

Mid and West AM Simon Thomas, Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Energy, Climate Change and Rural Affairs said:

“The Welsh EU Continuity Bill will be a toothless tiger if it is not triggered. The fiasco of the Conservative cabinet reshuffle resulted in the ammendments to protect Wales powers in the EU Withdrawl Bill not being submitted. The Welsh and Scottish Governments were given assurances that Theresa May’s Government would respect devolution, but its lack of action means that ammendments will have to be put forward in the unelected House of Lords rather than by MPs.

“This failure puts the ball in the Labour Government in Wales’ court. They should use the European Union Continuity Bill they have already drafted to make sure that Westminster does not take control of devolved powers that have come to Wales.”
