Local Resident’s Fury at Match Day Parking

Whilst Llanelli was celebrating an historic evening in Parc y Scarlets on Saturday evening, residents from the surrounding areas were yet again faced with serious parking issues.
This is despite the efforts from the Scarlets, who actively encourage supporters to use the shuttle bus services provided and to refrain from parking in residential areas. However, it seems that this advice is not being adhered to and the problem is getting worse.
Local Councillors, Jason Hart, Sharen Davies and Ella Simmons from the Llwynhendy Ward have all voiced grave concerns and have called for an urgent meeting in an attempt to solve this on-going problem before a major incident occurs, as Rescue Services would have no access around the area should there be an emergency, thus putting the lives of residents at risk.
During Saturday’s event, large volumes of cars were parked on double yellow lines, on junctions and pavements, forcing residents to take to Social Media to air their concerns.
One concerned resident posted “Hope that an ambulance or fire engine aren’t needed down bottom site tonight as they will never get through…”
Another added, “This is bonkers…now explain to me why they are not ticketing the cars which are parked illegally…”
There is parking available during match days , however it simply isn’t adequate to cater for the large volumes attending big games. This problem has worsened since one of the car parks was sold in order to house the Sessile Oak. However, Cllr Hart believes a solution would be to use the old Ysgol yr Ynys land for parking rather than development, coupled with a police presence around the area booking illegal parking.
Residents did contact the police on Saturday evening, with one stating on Social Media, “Police turned up at 6.30 after me phoning at 5 and turned round by my house and went straight up the rd there not interested.”
Cllr Sharen Davies added “Residents are totally exhausted by the situation.” She continued “I have requested on a number of occasions to meet with the transport management group to discuss the issue, however, to date, I have not had a response.”
Cllr Hart believes than an urgent meeting needs to happen before the next big home game at the end of March, when the Scarlets face La Rochelle in the Quarter Finals of the Champions’ Cup. He welcomes a public meeting between local residents, Carmarthenshire County Council, the Police and the Scarlets in order to discuss the issues and come up with a solution to secure the welfare of the local residents.
