Re-jigging of hospital services in the west shows the lack of leadership from Labour for Welsh NHS

Hywel Dda University Health Board will be reviewing the future of  hospitals within its boundaries with several options, including hospital closures, likely to be put out to consultation in the Spring.

During questions from Plaid Cymru Leader Leanne Wood in the Senedd the First Minister, Carwyn Jones stated his government had ‘no view’ on the leaked proposals.

In a press conference today (Tuesday) Plaid Cymru’s Mid and West AM Simon Thomas said:

“The Welsh NHS is crying out for leadership.  Patients in Wales need their government to set out its vision for the future, unfortunately Carwyn Jones sees things differently. He has attempted to shift the emphasis on the health board rather than on the direction given to the Welsh NHS by his government.

“The constant re-jigging of the health service in the west is just another example of a lack of leadership from the Labour administration in Cardiff Bay. The recent parliamentary review said nothing about hospital configuration

“This is yet another re-organisation under Labour, how many more times will it happen with the justification of ‘sustainability’ used and everyone forgets about the last one? Why was the last one not sustainable?

“Strengthening community health services is important and Plaid Cymru supports that, however it is not the same thing as arguing for ward closures and the transfer of services further away from people.

“The purpose of strengthening community health services should be to prevent unnecessary hospital admissions, not to prevent necessary ones. We will need hospitals for the foreseeable future.

“We need solutions on hospital services that recognises Wales has a rural/scattered population, rather than accepting a one size fits all urban model of healthcare which can be imposed on rural areas.

“The justification for these changes is staff shortages, but we think the answer here is recruitment more medical staff, more doctors, more nurses not centralising services.”

Ad-drefnu gwasanaethau iechyd yn y gorllewin yn dangos diffyg arweinyddiaeth gan Lafur i GIG Cymru

Bydd Bwrdd Iechyd Prifysgol Hywel Dda yn adolygu dyfodol ysbytai o fewn ei ffiniau gyda’r dewis o gau ysbytai yn saith o’r naw cynnig a fydd yn destun ymgynghori yn y Gwanwyn.

Yn ystod cwestiynau gan arweinydd Plaid Cymru Leanne Wood yn y Senedd, dywedodd Prif Weinidog, Carwyn Jones nad oedd gan ei lywodraeth ‘unrhyw farn’ am y cynigion a ryddhawyd yn answyddogol.

Mewn cynhadledd i’r wasg heddiw (Mawrth) dywedodd AC Plaid Cymru dros y Canolbarth a’r Gorllewin Simon Thomas:

“Mae GIG Cymru yn crefu am arweinyddiaeth. Mae ar gleifion yng Nghymru angen i’w llywodraeth  osod allan weledigaeth am y dyfodol; yn anffodus, mae Carwyn Jones yn gweld pethau’n wahanol. Mae wedi ceisio symud y pwyslais at y bwrdd iechyd yn hytrach nac ar y cyfeiriad a roddir i GIG Cymru gan ei lywodraeth.

“Mae ad-drefnu parhaus y gwasanaeth iechyd yn y gorllewin yn enghraifft arall eto fyth o ddiffyg arweinyddiaeth gan y weinyddiaeth Lafur ym Mae Caerdydd. Nid oedd yr adolygiad seneddol diweddar yn dweud dim am ail-gyflunio ysbytai.

“Dyma ad-drefnu arall eto dan Lafur: sawl gwaith eto y bydd hyn yn digwydd gyda’r cyfiawnhad o ‘gynaliadwyedd’ yn cael ei ddefnyddio a phawb yn anghofio am yr un diwethaf? Pam nad oedd yr un diwethaf yn gynaliadwy?

“Mae cryfhau gwasanaethau iechyd cymunedol  yn bwysig, ac y mae Plaid Cymru yn cefnogi hynny; fodd bynnag, dyw hynny ddim yr un peth â dadlau dros gau wardiau a throsglwyddo gwasanaethau ymhellach i ffwrdd oddi wrth bobl.

“Dylai cryfhau gwasanaethau iechyd cymunedol fod â’r nod o atal derbyn pobl yn ddiangen i ysbytai, nid atal derbyn pobl pan fydd angen. Bydd arnom angen ysbytai am y dyfodol rhagweladwy.

“Rydym eisiau atebion am wasanaethau ysbytai sydd yn cydnabod fod gan Gymru boblogaeth wledig/wasgaredig, yn hytrach na derbyn model gofal iechyd trefol un-fath-i-bawb sy’n cael ei osod ar ardaloedd gwledig.

“Prinder staff yw’r cyfiawnhad dros y newidiadau hyn, ond yn ein barn ni, yr ateb yw recriwtio mwy o staff meddygol, mwy o nyrsys, nid canoli gwasanaethau.”
