Youth Council launches campaigns on UKYP Day Of Action

CARMARTHENSHIRE Youth Council (CYC) has marked the UKYP National Day of Action (January 26) by launching its campaigns for the next 12 months.

Members have decided to get on board with the two chosen national issues – Votes@16 and Curriculum Reform.

During the coming year CYC will be undertaking school council debates, work with senior education managers in Carmarthenshire County Council about the curriculum reform which is taking place in Wales, as well as hosting consultation sessions and social media campaigns.

The topics have been chosen following the results of last year’s Mark your Mark ballot.

CYC member Alisha Gibbons led on the campaign in Carmarthenshire, which saw 4,635 (turnout of 26%) young people aged between 11-18 across the county get involved and vote on the most important issue to them. This was the largest turnout in Carmarthenshire since Make Your Mark began in 2011.

Alisha from Tycroes was elected to represent Carmarthenshire and Wales as Carmarthenshire’s UK Youth Parliament Member for 2017/18 by her colleagues on Carmarthenshire Youth Council.

The 17-year-old joined members of the UKYP in the House of Commons last November to debate and decide on the most important issue to campaign on for 2018.

Alisha said: “Not only has being a member of the United Kingdom Youth Parliament given me confidence and strength, but it’s also given me the chance to meet people from all over the UK and to hear their opinions. The votes at 16 campaign is a very special topic, as it gives us the voice and chance to help shape decisions that affect us most. Curriculum for life is also important as we, the younger generation need a curriculum that will prepare us for the busy world ahead of us.”

In November Carmarthenshire County Council’s full council supported a notice of motion initiated by CYC to support lowering the voting age to 16.

Executive board member for education and children’s services, Cllr Glynog Davies, said: “Young people in the county quite rightly believe that these subjects are important as the results of the Mark Your Mark ballot show. It is important now that we use this intelligence, especially in regards with the Youth Council’s work on the ‘Curriculum to prepare us for life’ campaign, to help inform the curriculum reform agenda in Wales.

“A lot of work has already been done on the Votes@16 campaign. At full council I presented a motion which was initiated by CYC which I’m pleased to say councillors supported. I look forward to continuing to work with the Youth Council members this year in raising awareness of these issues.”

MAE Cyngor Ieuenctid Sir Gaerfyrddin wedi nodi Diwrnod Gweithredu Cenedlaethol Senedd Ieuenctid y DU (26 Ionawr) drwy lansio’i ymgyrchoedd ar gyfer y 12 mis nesaf.

Mae’r aelodau wedi dewis cefnogi’r ddau fater cenedlaethol canlynol, sef Pleidlais yn 16 oed a Diwygio’r Cwricwlwm.

Yn ystod y flwyddyn sydd i ddod bydd Cyngor Ieuenctid Sir Gaerfyrddin yn cynnal trafodaethau cyngor ysgol, gweithio gydag uwch-reolwyr addysg yng Nghyngor Sir Caerfyrddin ynghylch diwygio’r cwricwlwm yng Nghymru, ynghyd â chynnal sesiynau ymgynghori ac ymgyrchoedd ar y cyfryngau cymdeithasol.

Dewiswyd y pynciau yn dilyn canlyniadau pleidlais Make your Mark y llynedd.

Arweiniodd Alisha Gibbons, sy’n aelod o Gyngor Ieuenctid Sir Gaerfyrddin, ar yr ymgyrch yn Sir Gaerfyrddin, lle roedd 4,635 (26%) o bobl ifanc rhwng 11 a 18 oed ledled y sir wedi cymryd rhan a phleidleisio ar y materion mwyaf pwysig iddynt. Dyma’r nifer mwyaf sydd wedi pleidleisio yn Sir Gaerfyrddin ers i Make your Mark ddechrau yn 2011.

Cafodd Alisha, sydd o Dŷ-croes, ei hethol gan ei chyd-aelodau ar Gyngor Ieuenctid Sir Gaerfyrddin i gynrychioli Sir Gaerfyrddin a Chymru fel Aelod o Senedd Ieuenctid y DU dros Sir Gaerfyrddin yn 2017/2018.

Ymunodd Alisha, sy’n 17 mlwydd oed, ag aelodau Senedd Ieuenctid y Deyrnas Unedig yn Nhŷ’r Cyffredin fis Tachwedd diwethaf i ddadlau a phenderfynu ynghylch y mater mwyaf pwysig i ymgyrchu yn ei gylch yn 2018.

Dywedodd Alisha: “Mae bod yn aelod o Senedd Ieuenctid y Deyrnas Unedig nid yn unig wedi rhoi hyder a nerth imi, ond mae e hefyd wedi rhoi cyfle imi gwrdd â phobl o bob cwr o’r Deyrnas Unedig a chlywed eu barn. Mae’r ymgyrch Pleidlais yn 16 oed yn bwnc arbennig iawn, gan ei fod yn rhoi llais inni a chyfle i helpu i lywio’r penderfyniadau sydd yn cael yr effaith fwyaf arnom. Mae Cwricwlwm ar gyfer bywyd hefyd yn bwysig gan fod arnom ni, y genhedlaeth iau, angen cwricwlwm a fydd yn ein paratoi ni ar gyfer y byd prysur sydd o’n blaenau.”

Ym mis Tachwedd cefnogodd cyngor llawn Cyngor Sir Caerfyrddin rybudd o gynnig a gafodd ei ysgogi gan Gyngor Ieuenctid Sir Gaerfyrddin i gefnogi gostwng yr oedran pleidleisio i 16 oed.

Dywedodd y Cynghorydd Glynog Davies, yr Aelod o’r Bwrdd Gweithredol dros Addysg a Gwasanaethau Plant: “Mae pobl ifanc yn y sir, wrth reswm, yn credu bod y pynciau hyn yn bwysig, fel y mae canlyniadau pleidlais Make your Mark yn ei ddangos. Mae’n bwysig nawr ein bod yn defnyddio’r wybodaeth hon, yn enwedig mewn perthynas â gwaith y Cyngor Ieuenctid ynghylch yr ymgyrch ‘Cwricwlwm i’n paratoi ar gyfer bywyd’, i helpu i lywio’r agenda o ran diwygio’r cwricwlwm yng Nghymru.

“Mae llawer o waith eisoes wedi’i wneud ar yr ymgyrch Pleidlais yn 16 oed. Yn y cyngor llawn cyflwynais gynnig oedd wedi cael ei ysgogi gan Gyngor Ieuenctid Sir Gaerfyrddin ac rwyf yn falch o allu dweud bod y cynghorwyr wedi ei gefnogi. Rwyf yn edrych ymlaen at barhau i weithio gydag aelodau y Cyngor Ieuenctid eleni er mwyn codi ymwybyddiaeth o’r materion hyn.
