Announcing the 100 day countdown to the Urdd Eisteddfod

Competitions in the Pig Sheds? Tarmac paths around the field? Beautiful views of the Welsh countryside? Yes, the Urdd Eisteddfod on the Royal Welsh Showground, Builth Wells is on the horizon!

An event was held today at the Royal Welsh Showground, Builth Wells to mark 100 days until the Urdd National Eisteddfod arrives in Brecon and Radnor between the 28th of May and 2nd of June 2018.

Tickets now for sale at up to 40% cheaper

It was also announced that tickets for the Eisteddfod are now for sale via the website www.urdd.cymru/tickets For the first time ever, it will be possible to buy an any day ticket, which means you won’t need to decide which day you will be visiting the Eisteddfod weeks in advance. And if you buy your tickets before the 30th of April, you will get them for a reduced price which is between 15 and 40% cheaper than if you wait until later or buy on the day.

This will be the first time that the Eisteddfod will have visited the area since the Llanelwedd Eisteddfod 40 years ago in 1978, and the event has grown significantly since then now welcoming 90,000 visitors annually.

Cllr. Aled Wyn Davies, Deputy Leader Powys County Council said, “We are very excited that the Urdd Eisteddfod is returning to Powys for the first time in 30 years, and to Llanelwedd for the first time in 40. Communities in the area have been busy preparing and raising funds for the event, and there has been a significant increase in the number of Urdd members in Brecon and Radnorshire, and in the number of children and young people taking part in the Urdd’s activities, showing that the Eisteddfod is already having a great impact. We are also looking forward to welcoming children and young people from all over Wales here to the event, and to the hive of activity that they will bring with them.”

During the Eisteddfod week at the end of May and beginning of June it will be possible to see 15,000 children competing in a variety of competitions from singing, acting and dancing to hairdressing and cookery. As well as competitions, on the field there will be activities such as sports sessions, a climbing wall, children’s shows, a funfair, live music and over 80 stands offering activities and selling a variety of goods. In the evenings, there will be all kinds of concerts, shows and competitions showcasing local and national talent.

Aled Siôn, Director of the Urdd Eisteddfod said, “We are so excited to be returning to this beautiful part of Wales for the first time in 40 years. As well as raising awareness of the Welsh language amongst local children and young people and their families, research shows that a visit to an area by the Eisteddfod contributes up to £6 million to the local economy and that 78% of visitors spend money in local businesses. I am very much looking forward to welcoming young people and families from all parts of Wales to Builth Wells in 100 days time.”

Heddiw, cynhaliwyd digwyddiad ar Faes y Sioe, Llanelwedd i nodi 100 diwrnod hyd nes y bydd Eisteddfod Genedlaethol yr Urdd yn cyrraedd ardal Brycheiniog a Maesyfed ar y 28 o Fai – 2 o Fehefin 2018.

Tocynnau ar werth am hyd at 40% yn rhatach

Cyhoeddwyd hefyd bod tocynnau’r Eisteddfod yn mynd ar werth heddiw drwy wefan www.urdd.cymru/tocynnau  Am y tro cyntaf erioed, bydd posib prynnu tocyn unrhyw ddydd, lle na fydd angen penderfynu pa ddiwrnod fyddwch chi’n ymweld â’r Eisteddfod ymhell o flaen llaw. Ac os archebwch eich tocynnau cyn y 30ain o Ebrill fe’u cewch am bris gostyngol sydd rhwng 15 a 40% yn rhatach na’u prynnu wedi hynny neu ar y diwrnod.

Dyma’r tro cyntaf i’r Eisteddfod ymweld â’r ardal ers Eisteddfod Llanelwedd 40 mlynedd yn ôl ym 1978, ac mae’r digwyddiad wedi tyfu tipyn ers hynny gan groesawu 90,000 o ymwelwyr yn flynyddol erbyn hyn.

Dywedodd y Cyng. Aled Wyn Davies, Dirprwy Arweinydd Cyngor Sir Powys “Rydym yn hynod gyffrous fod Eisteddfod yr Urdd yn dod yn ôl i Bowys am y tro cyntaf ers 30 mlynedd, ac i Lanelwedd am y tro cyntaf ers 40. Mae cymunedau’r ardal wedi bod yn brysur yn paratoi ac yn codi arian tuag at yr wyl, ac mae cynnydd aruthrol wedi bod yn nifer aelodau’r Urdd yn ardal Brycheiniog a Maesyfed, ac yn nifer y plant a phobl ifanc sy’n cymryd rhan yng ngweithgareddau’r Urdd, sy’n dangos fod yr wyl yn cael effaith fawr yn barod. Rydym hefyd yn edrych ymlaen at groesawu plant a phobl ifanc o bob rhan o Gymru yma i’r Eisteddfod, ac at y bwrlwm a ddaw gyda nhw.”

Bydd posib mwynhau gweld 15,000 o blant a phobl ifanc yn cystadlu yn ystod wythnos yr Eisteddfod ddiwedd Mai a dechrau Mehefin, mewn cystadlaethau yn amrywio o ganu, actio a dawnsio i drin gwallt a choginio. Yn ogystal â’r cystadlu, bydd gweithgareddau megis sesiynau chwaraeon, wal ddringo, sioeau i blant, ffair, cerddoriaeth fyw a dros 80 o stondinau yn cynnig gweithgareddau ac yn gwerthu nwyddau amrywiol ar y Maes. Gyda’r nos, bydd pob math o gyngherddau, sioeau a chystadlu yn arddangos talentau lleol a chenedlaethol.

Yn ogystal â chodi ymwybyddiaeth o’r Gymraeg ymysg plant a phobl ifanc yr ardal a’u teuluoedd, mae gwaith ymchwil yn dangos bod ymweliad yr Eisteddfod ag ardaloedd yn cyfrannu hyd at £6 miliwn i’r ardal leol a bod 78% o’r ymwelwyr yn gwario arian mewn busnesau lleol. Rydw i’n edrych ymlaen yn fawr at groesawu ieuenctid a theuluoedd o bob cwr o Gymru i Lanelwedd ymhen 100 diwrnod.”
