Britain’s fastest growing trade Union, GMB, has today endorsed Carolyn Harris MP as its choice for deputy leader of the Welsh Labour Party.
The union highlighted the Swansea East MP’s work on current campaigns that connect with the public as a major reason, including recent campaigns she’s spearheaded against changes to the Women’s state pension, fixed odds betting terminals and child burial fee’s all of which have struck a chord with public opinion.
JOHN PHILLIPS, GMB REGIONAL SECRETARY SAID:
_”Carolyn’s had a meteoric rise in a short space of time; sometimes you forget that she’s only been an MP for three years._
_”We feel that in that short space of time Carolyn has spearheaded popular campaigns that have captured public opinion. In particular we’ve worked with her on the changes to women’s state pension’s campaign and members responded strongly to her warmth and commitment.” [1]_
_”We think that she is the best candidate to represent GMB Members values and can represent all wings of the Labour movement in the day to day running of Welsh Labour.”_
MIKE PAYNE, GMB POLITICAL OFFICER SAID:
_”As a GMB member Carolyn is no stranger to this Region. In fact she has supported a number of campaigns and issues that the GMB has found to be important to its members since she was elected to Parliament in 2015. _
_”Her enthusiasm and passion shines through when you meet her, and we believe that she will be just the type of person needed to act as a bridge to all the parts of the Labour Movement, members, trade Unions and members of Socialist Societies”_
CAROLYN HARRIS MP SAID:
_”I’m extremely pleased to have the backing of my union GMB in this contest._
_”I’ve always had a close working relationship with GMB and its members, campaigning with them across a host of issues from the Public Sector Pay Pinch to campaigning against changes to Women’s Pensions._
_”I want to thank them for putting their faith in me and assure them that I will always be a strong voice for Trade Unions in the Labour movement.”_
