Woman who recovered from anorexia is pulling on her socks to fundraise for charity who helped her to “Sock It to Eating Disorders”
Emily Hoskins, 20 years old, from Abertillery, has recently launched her appeal to raise awareness about eating disorders and funds for Beat, the UK’s eating disorder charity.
Beat has sent out a call to people to fundraise and raise awareness to mark Eating Disorders Awareness Week (26 February – 4 March 2018).
Emily is raising funds for Beat on the 3 rd of March when she and her family will be doing a sponsored walk up Pen-y-Fan. Emily was diagnosed with Anorexia Nervosa when she was aged 13.
“It had a huge impact on not just my own life, but my families too. Constant hospital appointments, admissions hours away from home, arguments, tears, missing school, losing contact with friends and becoming completely isolated from the world outside my windows was the reality of most my teenage years”, remembers Emily.
“But with a lot of strength and determination it’s not where I am anymore, and I cannot thank every person especially my family and close friends that have helped me get to the place I am today. Some days still have their storms, but recovery for anyone will always be a work in process and the biggest lesson I’ve learnt is never to look back”.
As Emily’s 21st birthday approaches, she has decided that it’s her turn after eight long years to give something back and help support others who are currently in the same position as she once was.
Emily will be undertaking the walk alongside her extremely supportive sister, boyfriend and father.
“We will be wearing funky and ‘embarrassing’ socks whilst walking Pen-y-Fan because Beat’s chosen theme is ‘ ock t to ating isorders.’
“From first-hand experience I know how vital charities such as Beat can be to anyone who is struggling and am keen to raise as much money as possible”, adds Emily.

Beat’s National Officer for Wales, Jo Whitfield said: “We are calling people to be creative or pull on their brightest, boldest socks and fundraise for Beat to mark Eating Disorders Awareness Week.
“Eating disorder sufferers face an average wait of three and a half years for treatment. By wearing your socks, or organise a fundraising event like Emily is doing, you will help us provide support, tackle barriers to desperately needed treatment, and challenge the stigma”.
