Beacon Bursary competition launched

ENTRIES are now being taken for this year’s Beacon Bursary competition.

Budding entrepreneurs from the county are being urged to enter this year’s competition, which was launched at Coleg Sir Gâr’s Graig Campus.

The prize on offer has been increased this year to £5,000 along with a year’s free office space in the Beacon Centre for Enterprise in Dafen, Llanelli. The winner will also be offered mentoring support in a bid to develop their business. Two runners-up will receive £2,000 and six months free office space and £1,000 and six months free office space respectively.

The Beacon Bursary is open to further and higher education students living or aiming to set their business up in Carmarthenshire.

The annual competition is delivered through Carmarthenshire County Council in conjunction with Coleg Sir Gâr and University of Wales Trinity Saint David and forms part of the council’s commitment to developing entrepreneurship within the county.

Last year’s winner was Lian Cara Poulson from Llandovery whose winning proposal was to establish her own fashion label. She impressed the judges with her blend of creative talent, commercial vision and professional business plan and presentation.

Carmarthenshire Council leader, Cllr Emlyn Dole, said: “The aim of this competition is to nurture our county’s entrepreneurs and to offer them not only a chance to have a base to grow their business, but also to provide support from a team of business mentors from the private and public sector. “Previous winners have told us how invaluable winning this competition has been and I look forward to discovering all the new entrepreneurs we will meet through this competition this year.”

Coleg Sir Gâr Principal Barry Liles said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for someone to not only start or develop their own business but to receive the mentoring support that is all so crucial for a successful start-up.

“Last year we were thrilled to present our fashion degree student Lian with the award, who has since continued her business which was recently recognised and published by Vogue magazine.”

MAE cynigion yn cael eu derbyn nawr ar gyfer cystadleuaeth Bwrsariaeth y Goleudy eleni.

Anogir darpar entrepreneuriaid o’r sir i gymryd rhan yn y gystadleuaeth eleni a lansiwyd ar Gampws y Graig, Coleg Sir Gâr.

Mae’r wobr sydd ar gael wedi cynyddu eleni i £5,000, yn ogystal â swyddfa am ddim am flwyddyn yng Nghanolfan Fenter y Goleudy yn Nafen, Llanelli. Hefyd, cynigir cymorth mentora i’r enillydd, er mwyn ceisio datblygu ei fusnes. Bydd y sawl sy’n dod yn ail ac yn drydydd yn cael £2,000 a swyddfa am ddim am chwe mis a £1,000 a swyddfa am ddim am chwe mis, yn y drefn honno.

Mae Bwrsariaeth y Goleudy yn agored i fyfyrwyr addysg bellach ac addysg uwch sy’n byw yn Sir Gaerfyrddin neu sy’n bwriadu sefydlu eu busnes yn y sir.

Mae’r gystadleuaeth flynyddol yn cael ei chynnal gan Gyngor Sir Caerfyrddin, ar y cyd â Choleg Sir Gâr a Phrifysgol Cymru y Drindod Dewi Sant, ac mae’n rhan o ymrwymiad y Cyngor i ddatblygu entrepreneuriaeth yn y sir.

Yr enillydd y llynedd oedd Lian Cara Poulson o Lanymddyfri, a’i chynnig buddugol oedd sefydlu ei label ffasiwn ei hun. Roedd ei chyfuniad o dalent greadigol, gweledigaeth fasnachol a’i chynllun busnes a’i chyflwyniad proffesiynol wedi gwneud argraff ar y beirniaid.

Dywedodd y Cynghorydd Emlyn Dole, Arweinydd Cyngor Sir Caerfyrddin: “Nod y gystadleuaeth hon yw meithrin entrepreneuriaid yn ein sir ac nid yn unig cynnig cyfle iddynt gael canolfan i ddatblygu eu busnes, ond darparu cymorth gan dîm o fentoriaid busnes o’r sector preifat a’r sector cyhoeddus. “Mae enillwyr blaenorol wedi dweud wrthym pa mor werthfawr oedd ennill y gystadleuaeth hon ac edrychaf ymlaen at ddarganfod yr holl entrepreneuriaid newydd y byddwn yn cwrdd â nhw drwy’r gystadleuaeth eleni.”

Dywedodd Barry Liles, Pennaeth Coleg Sir Gâr: “Dyma gyfle gwych i rywun nid yn unig ddechrau neu ddatblygu eu busnes eu hunain ond derbyn y cymorth mentora sy’n hollbwysig wrth ddechrau busnes llwyddiannus.

“Y llynedd, roeddem yn falch iawn o gyflwyno’r wobr i Lian, myfyrwraig oedd yn astudio am radd mewn ffasiwn, ac ers hynny mae hi wedi parhau â’i busnes, ac yn ddiweddar cafodd ei gydnabod a’i gyhoeddi yng nghylchgrawn Vogue.”
