Tenovus Cancer Care, Wales’ leading cancer charity, is looking for volunteers to support its free Cancer Support Advice service in Swansea and Carmarthen.

Tenovus Cancer Care brings treatment, emotional support and practical advice to where it matters most; the heart of the community. It helps cancer patients and their loved ones cope, and through its vital research, it offers hope.

The charity’s Cancer Support Advisors support cancer patients and their loved ones, across Wales, if they have any worries about money when going through treatment. They provide benefits advice and help with access to grants and identifying needs for further support and practical help.

Volunteers are needed to support the Cancer Support Advisors and the wider West Wales team as they deliver this invaluable service, meaning they can be there for even more people. Volunteers will be based either at Singleton Hospital, Swansea or the Tenovus Cancer Care office in Carmarthen.

Cancer Support Advisors help to support people like Laura who contacted Tenovus Cancer Care when she needed to explain cancer to her children. Laura said, “I had no idea what help I needed, or what Tenovus Cancer Care could possibly do to help. But they got back to me straight away, and were really patient and helpful. No question is too small, or too silly. They never make me feel like I shouldn’t have asked. My Cancer Support Advisor helped us find much cheaper travel insurance so we could enjoy a family holiday even travelling with a person with cancer. Not only that, but they check back too. My advisor keeps in touch, so I feel like I can go back and ask a question in future if I need to, and I don’t feel on my own.”

Sharon Topazio, Regional Advice Services Manager at Tenovus Cancer Care said, “We have a team of Cancer Support Advisors working across Wales who do a fantastic job of supporting cancer patients and their families. The work we do at Tenovus Cancer Care would not be possible without the help of volunteers. If you could give a couple of hours a week to support our team in either Swansea or Carmarthen we would love to hear from you.”
