The short film features Welsh actress Ceri Lloyd, musician Branwen Haf Williams and the artist and writer Siôn Tomos Owen. Siôn, who also wrote the piece, weaves English with Welsh and hiraeth with hope as the language draws on familiar Welsh phrases to inspire action.
Viewers are taken on a journey to iconic landmarks and landscapes around Wales – from a frosty Rhondda colliery to a winter wonderland at Cwm Idwal. The film is filled with passion but there are also moments where they plea with the audience – to make a promise to take action, no matter how small it may seem.
SIÔN’S PASSION FOR OUR ENVIRONMENT COMES FROM HIS UPBRINGING. HE SAID:
“Since I was young and living on a farm, I have grown up with an affinity to nature and our environment. I hate seeing the damage that littering, fly tipping and dumping waste in our environment is doing.
It’s something that’s so easy to avoid too. Changing the mindset of young people to reuse, recycle and re-think about how what they use and throw away affect the future of the planet is very important. “
This year, WWF are shining a spotlight on the 1 in 6 of the planet’s species at risk of extinction from climate change. Much loved animals and wildlife, like elephants, turtles and polar bears, are at risk from the effects of climate change, pollution & over-consumption.
Making a ‘Promise for the Planet’ means committing to making changes to reduce our impact on the planet. The promises include small steps such as refusing plastic cutlery, turning the washing to 30°C or eating less meat. To find out more and make a promise, visit www.wwf.org.uk/earthhourwales
