The minister for life-long learning and the Welsh language will make a statement tomorrow on the Welsh Labour leadership election at a money advice event she has organised in Pembroke Dock.
The event is one of a series of eight advice days established in order to warn people who are already struggling with their bills to prepare for the roll out of Universal Credit.
The AM said:
“The Tory austerity cuts have forced more people into poverty, but the real challenge for us in Wales today is the increasing number of people who suffer from in-work poverty with many struggling to pay their bills which has a severe impact on people’s mental health.
Any leadership contender needs to have an answer to this and other fundamental questions that impact on people’s daily lives if they want to run the country.”
“Many are finding that their household budgets are squeezed as bills continue to rise. For people, especially on lower incomes, the changing benefits system and the increasing cost of living is making life much more stressful. In preparation for the roll out of Universal Credit, I’ve brought a whole range of organisations together to make it easy for people to get the information they need, all under one roof.”
More than a dozen local and national organisations have signed up to take part in the pop-up event aimed at helping local residents to access advice and support on a wide range of topics from benefit changes to energy savings and how to stay fit and healthy.
As well as advice from organisations such as the Pembrokeshire Citizen’s Advice, the Department for Work and Pension and Future Works, St. John’s Ambulance will be giving some essential first aid tips and the Pembrokeshire Trading Standards team will be helping visitors to spot a scam.
The ‘Your Health, Your Wealth’ event will be interactive, with healthy eating advice and demonstrations.
Hywel Dda Health Board and the Community Health Council will be meeting members of the public – the first such occasion since the launch of proposals to reconfigure hospital services in Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire.
Raise a concern
In addition to local support services, Eluned Morgan will be holding an advice surgery during the event, where local residents can raise a concern or ask a question about the role of the National Assembly for Wales.
A full list of the organisations taking part can be found on the special Your Health, Your Wealth website: www.yourhealthyourwealth.org launching on Friday which will feature videos and information on each organisation taking part.
