LORDS TO QUESTION SENIOR GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS ON BREXIT AND BIOSECURITY

 

THE HOUSE OF LORDS EU ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENT SUB-COMMITTEE WILL CONTINUE TAKING EVIDENCE FOR ITS INQUIRY INVESTIGATING THE IMPACT OF BREXIT ON THE UK’S PLANT AND ANIMAL BIOSECURITY ON WEDNESDAY 9 MAY.

 

The Committee will seek the views of senior Government officials on legislative preparation for Brexit, the UK’s border inspection capacity and anticipated changes to the resources needed for biosecurity after the UK leaves the EU.

 

THE EVIDENCE SESSION WILL BEGIN AT 10:30AM IN COMMITTEE ROOM 2 OF THE HOUSE OF LORDS. GIVING EVIDENCE WILL BE:

 

* PROFESSOR NICOLA SPENCE, Chief Plant Health Officer, Defra

* DR CHRISTINE MIDDLEMISS, Chief Veterinary Officer, Defra

* DR NIALL MOORE, Chief Non-Native Species Officer, Defra

* PROFESSOR GUY POPPY, Chief Scientist, Food Standards Agency

 

AREAS THE COMMITTEE ARE LIKELY TO COVER INCLUDE:

 

* The transfer of EU biosecurity legislation.

* The need for continued access to EU information sharing and surveillance.

* The implications for inspection and trade processes.

* The potential need for increased resources.
