Work to start on new archive building
WORK is set to start next week on the new £2.6 million archive extension at the rear of Carmarthen library.
The development of the new, much needed, purpose built archives facility, Y Stordy, will help ensure the awaited return of the Carmarthenshire Archives collection to the county.
Contractors TRJ are set to start work at the site on Monday, May 21. It is hoped that the archives, designed by Acanthus Holden, will be open in Autumn 2019.
Once complete Y Stordy will contain the current archive collection with room for up to around 25 years new material.
From Monday, (May 21), as part of the construction work – which is expected to take one year – 75 spaces will be temporarily unavailable in St Peter’s carpark. Part of the works also involve the relocation of a lighting column and ticket machine in the carpark. Parking is available at the remaining town centre car parks and the Nant y Ci Park and Ride service continues to operate with stops at Blue Street, Spilman Street and the hospital.
The library, community centre and car park will remain open as usual throughout the construction works.
Executive board member for transport, Cllr Hazel Evans, said: “We would like to apologise for any inconvenience this reduction in car parking spaces may have over the coming year, but it has been necessary to ensure safety whilst this work on the new archive building gets underway.”
Alongside the construction of the extension there will also be external works, internal alterations to the library, external fabric upgrade of the Book Stack and some improvements to the frontage of the existing library.
Executive board member for culture, sport and tourism, Cllr Peter Hughes Griffiths, said: “It’s great to see that work is starting next week on this fantastic purpose-built building which will bring back the archives collection to Carmarthenshire.”
Gwaith i ddechrau ar adeilad archif newydd
BYDD gwaith yn dechrau’r wythnos nesaf ar yr estyniad archif newydd gwerth £2.6 miliwn yng nghefn Llyfrgell Caerfyrddin.
Bydd datblygu Y Stordy, sef cyfleuster archifau pwrpasol newydd y mae ei angen yn fawr, yn helpu i sicrhau bod casgliad Archifau Sir Gaerfyrddin yn dychwelyd i’r sir.
Bydd contractwyr TRJ yn dechrau’r gwaith ar y safle ddydd Llun, Mai 21. Y gobaith yw y bydd yr archifau, a ddyluniwyd gan Acanthus Holden, ar agor yn nhymor yr hydref 2019.
Pan fydd y gwaith wedi’i gwblhau, bydd Y Stordy yn cynnwys y casgliad archifau presennol a bydd lle ar gyfer hyd at tua 25 mlynedd o ddeunydd newydd.
O ddydd Llun (Mai 21), fel rhan o’r gwaith adeiladu – y disgwylir iddo gymryd blwyddyn – ni fydd 75 o lefydd parcio ar gael dros dro ym maes parcio San Pedr. Mae rhan o’r gwaith hefyd yn cynnwys adleoli polyn golau a pheiriant tocynnau yn y maes parcio. Mae modd parcio ym meysydd parcio eraill canol y dref, a bydd gwasanaeth Parcio a Theithio Nant-y-ci yn parhau i weithredu gan alw yn arosfannau Heol Las, Heol Spilman a’r ysbyty.
Bydd y llyfrgell, y ganolfan gymunedol a’r maes parcio ar agor yn ôl yr arfer drwy gydol y gwaith adeiladu.
Dywedodd y Cynghorydd Hazel Evans, yr Aelod o’r Bwrdd Gweithredol dros Drafnidiaeth: “Hoffem ymddiheuro am unrhyw anghyfleustra y gall y lleihad o ran nifer y lleoedd parcio ei achosi dros y flwyddyn nesaf, ond mae wedi bod yn angenrheidiol i sicrhau diogelwch wrth i’r gwaith hwn gael ei gynnal ar yr adeilad archif newydd.”
Yn ogystal ag adeiladu’r estyniad, bydd gwaith allanol, newidiadau mewnol i’r llyfrgell, gwaith gwella adeiladwaith allanol y Storfa Lyfrau a rhai gwelliannau i flaen y llyfrgell bresennol.
Dywedodd y Cynghorydd Peter Hughes Griffiths, yr Aelod o’r Bwrdd Gweithredol dros Ddiwylliant, Chwaraeon a Thwristiaeth: “Mae’n wych gweld bod gwaith yn dechrau’r wythnos nesaf ar yr adeilad pwrpasol ffantastig hwn a fydd yn dod â’r casgliad archifau yn ôl i Sir Gaerfyrddin.”
