Pembrey chosen to host Tour of Britain opening

PEMBREY Country Park has been announced as the official location for the “Grand Depart” (start) of the 2018 OVO Energy Tour of Britain.

The announcement was made in central London on Tuesday evening.

It will be the first time that Britain’s biggest professional cycle race has visited the county.

The race sees 120 riders from some of the world’s best teams compete, including Olympic and World Champions and Tour de France stage winners.

The announcement supports the county’s aspiration to become the cycle hub of Wales as the National Closed Road Circuit-Carmarthenshire – a purpose-built 1.9km circuit in Pembrey Country Park – is close to opening this Summer.

Taking place on Sunday, September 2, the 2018 OVO Energy Tour of Britain will leave Pembrey Country Park and then continue throughout the county passing through Kidwelly, Carmarthen, Llandeilo and Llandovery as it continues into the Brecon Beacons through to its stage finish in Newport city centre.

The event is expected to see cycling fans descend on the county to get the chance to see some of the world’s riders competing, potentially bringing a boost of over £4 million to the local economy.

It will also have daily live coverage on ITV4 and Eurosport in the UK, and around the world.

Councillor Peter Hughes Griffiths, Carmarthenshire County Council’s Executive Board Member for Culture, Sport and Tourism, said: “This is great news for Carmarthenshire and especially Pembrey Country Park, where we’re expecting great crowds to come to this fantastic location to see the start of this iconic race. I’m sure visitors will make the most of their last weekend of the Summer holidays and stay in the county. We are working closely with Welsh Cycling to put on a number of activities for the weekend at Pembrey Country Park for the whole family.

“I also hope residents will come out and support the cyclists along the route from Pembrey to Llandovery.”

Dewis Pen-bre i gynnal agoriad Taith Prydain

CYHOEDDWYD mai Parc Gwledig Pen-bre yw’r lleoliad swyddogol ar gyfer “Grand Depart” neu agoriad Taith Prydain OVO Energy 2018.

Cafodd hyn ei gyhoeddi yng nghanol Llundain nos Fawrth.

Hon fydd y tro cyntaf i ras feicio broffesiynol fwyaf Prydain ymweld â’r sir.

Bydd 120 o feicwyr o rai o dimau gorau’r byd yn cystadlu yn y ras, gan gynnwys Pencampwyr Olympaidd a’r Byd ac enillwyr cymalau Tour de France.

Mae’r cyhoeddiad yn cefnogi dyhead y sir i fod yn ganolbwynt beicio Cymru gan fod y Gylchffordd Gaeedig Genedlaethol-Sir Gaerfyrddin – sef cylchffordd bwrpasol 1.9km o hyd ym Mharc Gwledig Pen-bre – yn agos at agor yr Haf hwn.

Bydd Taith Prydain OVO Energy 2018, a gynhelir ddydd Sul 2 Medi, yn gadael Parc Gwledig Pen-bre ac yna’n mynd yn ei blaen trwy’r sir. Bydd yn mynd trwy Gydweli, Caerfyrddin, Llandeilo a Llanymddyfri ac yna’n mynd i gyfeiriad Bannau Brycheiniog cyn gorffen y cymal yng nghanol dinas Casnewydd.

Disgwylir y bydd cefnogwyr beicio yn heidio i’r sir i gael cyfle i weld rhai o feicwyr y byd yn cystadlu, a allai ddod â hwb o dros £4 miliwn i’r economi leol.

Bydd hefyd yn cael sylw byw dyddiol ar ITV4 ac ar Eurosport yn y DU, ac o amgylch y byd.

Dywedodd y Cynghorydd Peter Hughes Griffiths, Aelod o Fwrdd Gweithredol Cyngor Sir Caerfyrddin dros Ddiwylliant, Chwaraeon a Thwristiaeth: “Mae hyn yn newyddion gwych i Sir Gaerfyrddin ac yn enwedig i Barc Gwledig Pen-bre, lle’r ydym yn disgwyl gweld tyrfaoedd mawr yn dod i’r lleoliad gwych hwn i weld dechrau’r ras eiconig hon. Rwyf yn siŵr y bydd ymwelwyr am wneud y gorau o benwythnos olaf eu gwyliau haf ac aros yn y sir. Rydym yn gweithio’n agos gyda Beicio Cymru i gynnal nifer o weithgareddau ar gyfer y penwythnos ym Mharc Gwledig Pen-bre ar gyfer y teulu cyfan.

“Rwyf hefyd yn gobeithio y bydd y trigolion yn dod allan i gefnogi’r beicwyr ar hyd y daith o Ben-bre i Lanymddyfri.”
