Fourteen years of fundraising for the NSPCC has this month seen Matalan break through the £10 million barrier.
The Liverpool based out-of-town retailer with 227 stores nationwide is the NSPCC’s longest standing retail partner, with staff having been raising money for the children’s charity since 2004.
The £10 million pounds has been used to make a difference to hundreds of thousands of children’s lives, both in Merseyside and across the UK, by investing in Childline and services dedicated to helping young people recover from abuse and neglect.
John Hargreaves, founder of Matalan, also led an appeal to raise funds for a new purpose built therapy centre in Liverpool.
The Hargreaves Centre opened in 2007 and now houses the Liverpool Childline base and NSPCC services that work with young people who have experienced abuse and neglect.
Matalan’s fundraising for the charity began with a London Marathon team, who ran the race in 2004.
From then on, their support has evolved to involve every part of the business and their customers, who have also rallied behind the charity’s work.
One of the stalwarts of Matalan’s fundraising efforts has been four charity balls in aid of the NSPCC, which raised a massive £3 million.
Peter Wanless, CEO of the NSPCC, said: “Reaching this incredible milestone is a fantastic achievement by Matalan and something that everyone associated with the company should be really proud about.
“The £10 million raised by their employees, customers and the Hargreaves family has helped us change hundreds of thousands of children’s lives for the better, both in Liverpool and across the UK.
“We now look forward to continuing this fantastic partnership long into the future, working together to help many more children in need.”
Jason Hargreaves, Matalan’s Chief Executive Officer added: “Matalan and the Hargreaves family are so proud of this achievement. “
The work that the NSPCC carries out is invaluable and it’s amazing to see how the £10 million raised by Matalan since 2004 has been utilised.
“Matalan will continue to support the NSPCC and we’re truly privileged to be the longest standing retail partner of the charity.”
To celebrate this milestone in the partnership, television personalities Lydia Bright and Debbie Douglas are visiting Matalan HQ to take part in special events throughout today (26th June).
