Action for Children’s Swansea SAIL project in partnership with Mums with Passion, Penlan Methodist Church, Interplay, Step by Step and Swansea Best Start has opened the new Penlan Community Garden at their annual community garden party at Penlan Methodist Church on Thursday 19th July.

The new garden, funded by Swansea Grow Local, was officially opened by 3-year-old Jaxon Otteson and mother, Danielle Touze of Penlan who cut the ribbon.

Alison Long, manager of Swansea SAIL said: ‘We always have a garden party at this time of year but with the launch of the community garden we thought this would be the perfect opportunity to work in partnership with some of the other groups that use the Methodist church to provide an event for the whole community.

‘The garden will be open to all involved with the project and the church as well as the local community. Members of the gardening club have been working to get the garden ready and now have a thriving crop of veggies, some of which were sold at the garden party. We’re all delighted this great community resource will now open so a huge thank you to everyone who has made it happen.’

The Reverend Howard Long, minister for Penlan Methodist Church added: ‘It’s really good as it acts as focal point in the community and there’s not much of that in Penlan at the moment. We’re also working with Mums with Passion who, like Action for Children, are in here weekly and they’re benefitting from the garden as well. We also hope to develop it and work with schools where children can learn how food is grown, where it comes from so it’s going to be an educational resource as well.’

Families enjoyed a barbecue, food stalls, cream teas and children’s activities during the garden party in glorious Swansea sunshine.
