The Urdd is launching a new campaign to ensure that some of the most deprived Welsh children and young people will be able to attend a Summer Camp holiday in 2019.
As part of the new ‘Fund for All – Urdd Summer Camp’ scheme, the organisation is searching for individuals to sponsor a visit for at least 100 children during the 2019 summer holidays. Sponsorship of £160 each will pay for a full place for one child on a 5-day course at either Gwersyll Llangrannog in Ceredigion, Glan-llyn near Y Bala or the Urdd Cardiff City sleepover.
One of the Urdd’s aims is to ensure inclusivity and this fund will be a step to achieve that goal. Education Secretary Kirsty Williams AM has already discussed the development with the Urdd and is very supportive of the “Opportunity for All” fund.
Kirsty Williams said:
“ Many of us hold fond memories of summer camps, whether at Glanllyn, Llangrannog or elsewhere. They are often a first taste of independence and of being responsible for one’s self and an opportunity to forge new friendships and build confidence.
“There is also strong evidence that experiences like this can have a positive impact on both aspiration and attainment. All children, regardless of their financial situation should have opportunities to experience a summer camp so I am delighted the Urdd are helping us to ensure children from disadvantaged backgrounds can benefit in the same way as their friends.
The Fund will be launched at the National Eisteddfod of Wales in Cardiff Bay, 4-11 August, and it will be opened for applications in 2019 when schools or parents will be able to apply for a place on a child’s behalf.
Since they were established in the 1930s the Urdd Summer camps, very similar to Camp America, have offered fun and outdoor activity filled holidays and an opportunity to make friends with children from all over Wales. With figures showing that 29% of children in Wales live in poverty, the Urdd believes it is important to offer opportunities for all to take advantage of it’s summer camp experiences. Welcoming the scheme, Sally Holland, Children’s Commissioner for Wales, said;
“Every child and young person in Wales has a right to access to cultural activities but many are denied such important experiences because of their family’s financial situation. I am really pleased to see the Urdd identify a very practical way of alleviating the symptoms of child poverty.”
The fund has already gained the support of a corporate sponsor with Llanellli based company Tinopolis. Angharad Mair, Executive Director said,
“As a company based in Llanelli, one of the most disadvantaged areas in Wales we are very proud to be supporting this fantastic scheme. Ensuring that children who may otherwise be unable to benefit in the same way due to financial circumstances beyond their control, can benefit from similar experiences all through the Welsh language is so important.”
Sian Lewis, Chief Executive of Urdd Gobaith Cymru said,
“The Urdd offers a wide range of fantastic activities and services for children and young people throughout the year, but attending a Summer Camp has to be one of the most unique Urdd experiences. We have been investigating innovative ways to ensure that a family’s financial circumstance does not necessarily need to mean a child missing out.
I’m sure a number of Urdd supporters and former members look back at their summers in the Gwersyll with very fond memories so this is fantastic opportunity to ensure that today’s children have the same opportunities and in doing so leave a legacy for the future.”
‘Cyfle I Bawb’ – Cronfa Newydd Gwersyll Haf yr Urdd
Mae’r Urdd yn lansio ymgyrch newydd i sicrhau bod rhai o blant a phobl ifanc mwyaf difreintiedig Cymru yn medru mynychu Gwersyll Gwyliau Haf yn 2019.
Fel rhan o gynllun ‘Cyfle i bawb – Cronfa Gwersyll Haf yr Urdd’, mae’r mudiad yn chwilio am unigolion i noddi gwyliau i blant yn ystod gwyliau haf 2019. Bydd y nawdd o £160 yr un yn ariannu lle cyflawn i blentyn ar gwrs 5-diwrnod yn unai Gwersyll Llangrannog yng Ngheredigion, Gwersyll Glan-llyn ger y Bala neu Wersyll Caerdydd.
Nod parhaus yr Urdd yw bod yn fudiad cynhwysol i holl blant Cymru a bydd y gronfa yma yn gam i wireddu’r nod hwnnw. Bu’r Ysgrifennydd dros Addysg Kirsty Williams AC, eisoes yn trafod datblygiad y Gwersylloedd gyda’r Urdd ac mae’n gefnogol iawn o gynllun “Cyfle i Bawb”.
Gan groesawu’r gronfa dywed Kirsty Williams:
“Mae nifer ohonom a atgofion mor hapus o wyliau haf boed hynny yng Nglan-llyn , Llangrannog neu ganolfannau eraill. Yn aml, dyma brofiad cyntaf plentyn o annibyniaeth, o gymryd cyfrifoldeb ac i gwrdd a ffrindiau newydd a chodi hyder.
“ Mae ymchwil hefyd yn dangos y gall profiadau fel hyn gael effaith bositif ar ddyheadau a chyrhaeddiad. Dylai bob un plentyn, be bynnag eu sefyllfa ariannol gael profi gwefr a mwynhad gwyliau haf ac rwy’n falch iawn o weld yr Urdd yn ceisio sicrhau fod plant o gefndir difreintiedig yn gallu cael y r’un cyfle a mwynhad.
Bydd y gronfa yn cael ei lansio yn swyddogol yn Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Cymru ym Mae Caerdydd, 4-11 Awst gyda’r gronfa yn agor yn 2019 er mwyn i ysgolion neu rieni wneud cais am le ar ran plentyn.
Ers eu sefydlu yn 1930au, mae Gwersylloedd Haf yr Urdd wedi cynnig gynnig gwyliau llawn hwyl, gweithgareddau awyr agored a chyfle i wneud cyfeillion newydd i blant o bob cwr o Gymru .Gyda ystadegau’n dangos bod 29% o blant yng Nghymru yn byw mewn tlodi, cred yr Urdd fod hi’n bwysig cynnig cyfle i bawb gael manteisio ar brofiadau ei gwersylloedd.
Mae’ gronfa eisoes wedi derbyn cefnogaeth y cwmni cyfryngau, Tinopolis, fel noddwr corfforaethol. Dywedodd Angharad Mair, Cyfarwyddwr Gweithredol y cwmni,
“Fel cwmni sydd wedi ei leoli yn Llanelli, un o ardaloedd mwyaf difreintiedig Cymru, rydym yn falch iawn o fod yn cefnogi’r cynllun gwych yma. Mae sicrhau bod plant na fyddent yn elwa yn yr un ffordd oherwydd amgylchiadau ariannol y tu hwnt i’w rheolaeth, yn gallu derbyn profiadau tebyg a hynny drwy’r iaith Gymraeg yn bwysig tu hwnt.”
Dywed Sian Lewis, Prif Weithredwr yr Urdd,
“Mae’r Urdd yn cynnig ystod eang o weithgareddau a gwasanaethau gwych ar gyfer plant a phobl ifanc drwy gydol y flwyddyn ac mae mynychu Gwersyll Haf yn un o’r profiadau mwyaf unigryw i’r Urdd. Dyma pan rydym ni wedi bod yn chwilio am ddulliau arloesol i sicrhau nad yw sefyllfa ariannol teulu yn golygu bod rhaid i blentyn golli cyfle.
Rydw i’n siŵr bod gan nifer o gefnogwyr a chyn-aelodau’r Urdd atgofion melys am eu hafau yn y Gwersyll felly mae hyn yn gyfle gwych i sicrhau bod plant heddiw yn cael yr un profiadau a thrwy hynny yn gadael etifeddiaeth ar gyfer y dyfodol.”
