Llanelli Prepares To Be Yarn Bombed!
The last two weeks of August last year saw a trend with a difference, knitted items started to appear around Llanelli Town Centre. It certainly caused a stir in the town with people commenting on how the town appeared brighter and more cheerful as a result and even taking selfies with colourful, coloured bollards on Stepney Street.
Local knitting group: The Crafty Seniors were responsible for the knitted creations and are delighted to be doing the same this year. Look out for their creations dotted around Llanelli’s Town Centre from August 19 onwards. This year is known as ‘Year Of the Sea’ and is a wonderful theme to work by, no doubt there will be some exuberant flashes of colour.
The group which is based out of Clos Llanfihangel in Dafen have spent months knitting a variety of bunting, bollard covers and various other sea-themed items to dress up Llanelli. Look out for the knitted fish, turtles, coral and other ocean-inspired items in shop windows throughout the town. The Sosban Shedders have also been involved in the project and have made wooden whales for this year’s yarn bombing treasure hunt. There is wonderful group involvement within the project.
As part of the sea-themed week, the pom-pom covered whales will be placed in 12 businesses around the town for people to find. The prize for finding all 12 will be a back to school hamper which has been kindly donated by Wilko which is located in The St Elli Centre. Entry forms and clues to each business can be found at and returned to Llanelli Library.
Ymlaen Llanelli (also known as The BID Project) is the town’s Business Improvement District and has supported the initiative for the last two years.
Ymlaen Llanelli Chair Lesly Richards told The West Wales Chronicle:
“We are delighted to support the Crafty Seniors with the yarn bombing again this year. It was such a strong talking point in town last summer and I can’t wait to see this year’s creations.”
Gaynor Churchill of the Crafty Seniors added:
“Everyone in the group has been working so hard in the last few months to get everything ready and we are so excited that our work will be displayed for everyone to see. It’s also been great working with the Sosban Shedders who’ve provided the wooden whales for the trail which we hope children will enjoy taking part in.”
