Both teams giving it their all

Football Report…….

The new season kicked off with Cwm welcoming Undy Athletic to Grenig Park (August 8). The sun had disappeared and the heavens opened and in ninety minutes the Cwm defence floodgates had opened!

It all started so well. As Undy settled in having been delayed on the M4 Cwmamman mounted attack after attack in the first ten minutes. Kyle Nugget Ashford went close, a curling shot from Ryan Thomas was well saved and Ryan Hurlow hit the post. All this pressure then paid dividends in the twelfth minute as Ashley Curtis sped on to a lob over the defence from Ross Jones and calmly put Cwm in the lead.

Both teams giving it their all

All seemed under control until a failed clearance by Cwm allowed a simple tap in for Alex Jarman. This gave Undy huge confidence and they took hold of the game scoring two further goals through Jarman and Harry Waterhouse. The third, a very fortunate deflection seeing the ball trickle in as Chris Curtis the Cwm goalie was going the other way.

Cwm started the second half with Ross Morgan coming on to provide further impetus in midfeld. It paid off with Ryan Thomas pulling a goal back. However the comeback was short lived as a simple shot from Olly Smith at goalkeeper Curtis spun on the wet surface and spun from his hands squirting over the line. Unfortunate for Curtis as prior to this as he had pulled off a couple of excellent saves.

Things went from bad to worse as a through ball to Marcus Power saw the defensive tackle cause the ball to spin over the Cwm keeper into the net. Cwm then had another good spell seeing Ryan Thomas pull another back but time ran out on any serious comeback.
Overall a game lost on a combination of key errors and bad luck with a need for significant improvement for the visit from Goytre to the park on Saturday.
