This year however, staff at the Tan Y Dre residential service in Wrexham decided they wanted to do something special for their youngsters and take them to Disneyland Paris. They did bag packs, supermarket collections and school assemblies and raised enough money to take the young people on the holiday of a lifetime to Disneyland.
Caroline Morris, Tan Y Dre’s registered manager, said: ‘We had an idea last year to reward our young people and treat them as much like they would be treated if they were at home. Out of the four young people we look after, two had never been abroad before so we decided to take them to Disneyland Paris. To raise the funds, we did a sponsored skydive, packed bags at supermarkets and did collections at school assemblies and peoples’ generosity meant we could afford this great trip abroad.
‘Ultimately, we just wanted them to have the life experience of going abroad, travelling to different places in the hope that this will inspire them to want a life like this for their future. They’ve been with us for over 2 years and this is our way of thanking them and letting them know they’re amazing people and we’re very honoured and privileged that we get the opportunity to look after them and give them a brilliant childhood.’
Tan Y Dre is a four bedded therapeutic residential home for children and young people between the ages of 9 -17 years. It provides support for young people who have experienced early life trauma.
Paige Cunliffe, (15), said: ‘It really was a holiday of a lifetime and I would just like to say a big thank you to all the staff and the people who helped us raise the money and get us to Disneyland Paris. Thank you all so much.’
