Local photographer Susan Hurst was born in Burry Port but now resides in Llanelli. She started taking photographs around 15 years ago and clearly knows how to work her magic. The West Wales Chronicle spoke with Susan and asked her a series of questions regarding her love of photography. Susan gave a lovely interview with some great answers. She’s always looking for individuals interested in the world of photography to come along on field trips with her. Any level of photography, be it a beginner is encouraged to get in touch with Susan who has taken up more of her creative passion since retirement.
Susan told The West Wales Chronicle:
“I’ve always liked taking photos and my interest has grown from there really. My fist camera was a bridge camera, which is recommended for anyone starting out. The reason being to see if they like photography before progressing onto something a bit more expensive.
“My inspiration is a wonderful Llanelli artist by the name of Joyce Miller who’s very well known in the town. Photography is a true inspiration! She takes wonderful photographs and puts her heart and soul into each one. I like macro photography, I can often be seen in funny positions trying to capture close-ups of dragonflies and butterflies!
“Also landscape photography is a love of mine. My chosen cameras are my Canon D1300 and for general carry about I’ve just got a Sony a6000, lovely little camera which is great if you’re going to lug about a load of equipment! I’ve just returned from a visit to my daughter in Scotland, where I visited Glasgow and took some photos of the street art there. Everyone who knows me knows I take my camera everywhere!
“I wanted to capture the amazing street art there. Smug* is a famous artists, his artwork is amazing! Also Rogue one is another. People come from all over the world to see their work! Llanelli I’m sure has artists that are talented, if only they had an opportunity to express themselves! The town at the moment is run down, there are beautiful buildings which have been neglected over the years.
“If given the opportunity (just think) beautiful works of art like these would bring people from far and wide to see! As long as it wasn’t offensive in any way it would be a Mecca for Welsh art! And promote Llanelli’s talented youngsters of course. It would bring people back into the centre of town and boost the economy. This town needs rejuvenation badly.”
