Reports of a bogus male cold caller have been received from a number of concerned residents in the Furnace and Stradey areas of Llanelli within the last few days. Also reports have been received from areas of Dafen.

The male when asked the reason for visiting properties claims to be collecting for Macmillan Cancer Support. He states he’s collecting for a sponsored walk or a coffee morning.

The individual may well be legitimate in his actions, however his sponsor form is a blank piece of paper and he doesn’t ask for Gift Aid.

Two residents have asked when the sponsored walk is to take place but he replies he doesn’t know yet.

Reports have been made to 101 by concerned local Councillor John Jenkins who has liased with some concerned members of the public. Also the Neighbourhood Policing Team have been vigilant whilst on patrol in spotting the cold caller.

The West Wales Chronicle have contacted Dyfed-Powys Police for an official comment but are awaiting a response from them.

Councillor John Jenkins said:

“A number of residents have contacted me directly and I’ve seen a discussion on an individual going door-to-door cold calling for sponsorship.

“My mum and I even sponsored him £2 each when he called at our house.

“However some residents nearby were concerned that the chap who knocked their doors was vague and inconsistent in how he was raising the funds. To some he told residents he was doing a sponsored walk but others he said a coffee morning. For both he didn’t know the date.

“Whether he is a well-intentioned amateur or whether it is a scam, I advise all residents to be cautious when handing money over to a stranger on your doorstep.”
