Report To Look Into Fly Infestation Problems!

Following pressure from Llanelli Town Council, Carmarthenshire County Council’s Environmental and Public Protection Scrutiny Committee have now requested that County Council Officers produce a report into the Fly Infestation problems in Llanelli.The report will include information on the management process and response arrangements for dealing with similar infestation incidents.

At a Town Council meeting held on the 6th June 2018, Llanelli Town Councillor Sean Rees proposed that the County’s Environmental and Public Protection Scrutiny Committee should look into the Fly Infestation that has affected many parts of Llanelli including the Glanymor Ward as part of their forward work programme for 2018/19.

The proposal received the backing of the Town Council and it was agreed to write to the Environmental and Public Protection Scrutiny Committee to ask them to investigate the matter.

On hearing the news that a report will now be produced,

Councillor Rees said:

“I’m pleased to see my proposal has been taken forward. I want to thank my fellow Town Councillors for their support. This is yet another example of what we can achieve when we work together. The stronger we are, the greater influence we will have.

“This fly infestation has caused so much misery, frustration, expense and stress for everyone in the area who have had to cope with such disgusting conditions.

“There are some lessons that need to be learnt. Residents views must be heard. I’m also calling for the County Council to explore the possibility of bringing back its Pest Control division after it was regrettably scrapped back in 2011.

“The creation of a report is a welcome step in the right direction. We all hope that such a report will now ensure control measures are reviewed in order to tackle any future problems should they arise. Our community still needs answers, the investigations are far from over.”

Amanda Carter (Seaside resident) added:

“This is some good news following what has been a difficult time for all of us in the community.

“We are all still worried that we may have problems again once the warm weather returns. So far, all we have had are the words “probable source”, this is not acceptable, where is the accountability in that?

“Hundreds of residents turned up to two public meetings that I organised locally. All of our views now need to be taken on board.”
