Cwmamman United will feel like it’s two points lost and Port Talbot a point gained in this entertaining encounter played yesterday (September 4).
A nil nil draw would suggest that both teams cancelled each other out with few scoring opportunities. However the statistics of this game prove contrary as Cwmamman had twelve attempts on target compared to five from the visitors.
As early as the seventh minute, Cwm striker Christian Allen almost put his team in front. Further opportunities fell his way and Port Talbot were battling to stay in the game. A goal line clearance and Cwm’s wideman Ryan Hurlow’s shot rattled the visitors goal post and rebounded out of play.
Port Talbot were always a threat on the counter attack and it took some resolute defence from the home team to thwart the Port Talbot attacks. Cwmamman’s centre backs Nathan McNeil and Gareth Howarth formed a formidable partnership in central defence.
At half time it was 0-0 and a little frustrating for the home team not to have their noses in front.
The second half saw Cwmamman try to break down their opponents but again chances went begging with Cwm’s Ashley Curtis, Ryan Thomas and Ryan Hurlow all going close.
Port Talbot’s midfielders pressed Cwm’s back line but again good defensive work marshalled by Cwm’s Goalkeeper/ Captain Chris Curtis kept the visitors out.
As the darkness descended it was the partial floodlights that ensured the game continued to the final whistle.
Referee Ben Williams blew the final whistle and the game ended In a 0-0 draw. Port Talbot will be pleased with a good point away from home and Cwmamman will be satisfied with a clean sheet and a point but will be left feeling of what might have been if one of the gilt edged chances had gone in.
Cwmamman United now turn their attention to League Cup Action this Saturday (September 8) when Newport City visit Grenig Park.
