Former nurses are being given the chance to get back to work on the wards thanks to an award- winning programme offered by Swansea University.
Nicola Banner and Angela Bevan took time away from work for health and family reasons but they are among the successful students who have been able to go resume career they loved after completing the course. They also benefited from the course being delivered in Carmarthen, closer to their homes.
The Return to Practice course prepares nurses whose registration has lapsed to go back to their field of nursing care in today’s dynamic and challenging clinical areas.
The fully funded 18- week course is approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), and as well as undertaking a clinical placement, students take part in study days as well as receiving advice on preparing a CV, applying for jobs and preparing for interviews.
Nicola, from Narberth, took a break from nursing and worked as a peripatetic assessor in childcare, but after undergoing major surgery, she let her nursing registration lapse.
Now fully recovered, Nicola decided she wanted to go back to nursing. She said: “I felt nervous, but I went along to an open day and signed up for the course.
“It was definitely the right decision for me and I was really surprised by how much knowledge came back when I returned to the wards. The course has got a really good reputation and it was designed so that our individual needs were met and so that we could be brought back up to date with nursing today.”
Angela, from Haverfordwest, recently completed the return to practice programme after a nine-year career break to raise her children. She said: “The main reason that I’m returning to nursing is that my children are becoming more independent and although I enjoy being a mum, I missed being Angela and I miss being part of a team.”
She added: “I had an excellent mentor who was very supportive and welcoming and I also got plenty of help from the tutors. There are plenty of opportunities to go on placements – I enjoyed my placement on coronary care so much that I’ve actually got a job there.”
Programme Director Keith Bradley-Adams said: “At Swansea University we pride ourselves on having successfully run a leading Return to Practice course that is embedded in our commitment to nurse education and which provides a stepping stone to enable nurses return to their vocation.
“We are extremely proud of our award-winning course and believe our passion is reflected in the passion our students take into clinical practice.”
He said students’ lives can be transformed by undertaking the course.
He added: “They make new friends, develop new skills and regain their confidence.
“Feedback from colleagues in practice informs us that once registered, our students continue to deliver high-quality nursing care to their patients. Many also develop a desire to continue their education and return to the university to seek new challenges.”

Ydych chi’n dal yn angerddol am nyrsio?Dewch yn ôl i’r gyrfa rydych chi’n dwlu arni
Mae gan gyn-nyrsys y cyfle i fynd yn ôl i weithio ar y wardiau diolch i raglen arobryn a gynigir gan Brifysgol Abertawe.
Cymerodd Nicola Banner ac Anegla Bevan amser i ffwrdd o’r gwaith am resymau iechyd a theuluol ond maent ymhlith y myfyrwyr llwyddiannus sydd wedi gallu ailgydio mewn gyrfa roeddent yn dwlu arni wedi cwblhau’r cwrs. Roedd y ffaith bod y cwrs yn cael ei gynnal yn agosach i’w cartrefi yng Nghaerfyrddin hefyd yn fuddiol iddynt.
Mae’r cwrs Dychwelyd i Ymarfer yn paratoi nyrsys y mae eu cofrestriad wedi dod i ben i fynd yn ôl i’w maes gofal nyrsio ym meysydd dynamig a heriol heddiw.
Mae’r cwrs 18 wythnos a ariennir yn llawn wedi’i gymeradwyo gan y Cyngor Nyrsio a Bydwreigiaeth (NMC) ac yn ogystal â chwblhau lleoliad clinigol, mae myfyrwyr yn cymryd rhan mewn diwrnodau astudio ynghyd â derbyn cyngor ar baratoi CV, ymgeisio am swyddi a pharatoi ar gyfer cyfweliadau.
Cymerodd Nicola, o Narberth, gyfnod i ffwrdd o nyrsio gan weithio fel asesydd peripatetig mewn gofal plant, ond ar ôl cael llawdriniaeth fawr, gadawodd i’w chofrestriad nyrsio ddod i ben.
Bellach wedi adfer yn llawn, penderfynodd Nicola ei bod hi am ddychwelyd at nyrsio. Meddai, “Roeddwn i’n teimlo’n nerfus ond es i at ddiwrnod agored a chofrestru ar gyfer y cwrs.
“Dyma oedd y penderfyniad cywir i fi, heb os, ac roeddwn i wedi synnu’n fawr gan faint o wybodaeth a ddaeth yn ôl ataf pan ddychwelais i at y wardiau.Mae gan y cwrs enw da iawn ac fe’i dyluniwyd er mwyn diwallu ein hanghenion unigol ac er mwyn ein diweddaru ni’n llawn am nyrsio heddiw.”
Cwblhaodd Angela o Hwlffordd y rhaglen yn ddiweddar ar ôl seibiant gyrfa o 9 blynedd i fagu ei phlant. Meddai, “Y prif reswm dros ddychwelyd at nyrsio yw bod fy mhlant yn fwyfwy annibynnol ac er fy mod i’n mwynhau bod yn fam, roeddwn i’n gweld eisiau bod yn Angela ac rydw i’n gweld eisiau bod yn rhan o dîm.”
Ychwanegodd, “Roedd gen i fentor gwych a oedd yn gefnogol ac yn groesawgar iawn a ches i lawer o gymorth gan y tiwtoriaid hefyd.Mae digon o gyfleoedd i fynd ar leoliadau. Mwynheais i fy lleoliad ar ofal coronaidd gymaint fy mod i wedi cael swydd yno.”
Meddai Cyfarwyddwr y Rhaglen, Keith Bradley-Adams: “Ym Mhrifysgol Abertawe, rydym yn ymfalchïo ein bod ni wedi cynnal cwrs Dychwelyd i Ymarfer yn llwyddiannus, sef cwrs sydd wedi’i wreiddio yn ein hymrwymiad i addysg nyrsio ac sy’n cynnig cam i alluogi nyrsys i ddychwelyd i’w galwedigaeth.
“Rydym yn hynod falch o’n cwrs arobryn a chredwn fod ein hangerdd wedi’i hadlewyrchu yn yr angerdd y mae ein myfyrwyr yn mynd â hi i ymarfer clinigol.”
Meddai y gall bywydau myfyrwyr gael eu trawsnewid drwy gwblhau’r cwrs.
Ychwanegodd, “Maent yn gwneud ffrindiau newydd, yn datblygu sgiliau ac yn adennill eu hyder.
“Mae adborth gan gydweithwyr sy’n ymarfer yn dweud wrthym fod ein myfyrwyr yn parhau i ddarparu gofal nyrsio o safon i’w cleifion ar ôl cofrestru.Mae llawer ohonynt hefyd yn datblygu dyhead i barhau â’u haddysg a dychwelyd i’r brifysgol i roi cynnig ar heriau newydd.”
