WITNESS APPEAL

Dyfed-Powys Police are investigating a report of a serious sexual assault, which happened at the canal path behind Canal Road, Newtown, last night (Monday, September 24, 2018).

A man has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and remains in police custody.

Officers are now appealing to anyone who was walking along that path between 8pm and 11pm to come forward.

Detective Sergeant Andy Evans said:

“A man is in custody helping us with our enquiries but we need to build a clearer picture of what happened.

“We know this path is popular with walkers, dog walkers and joggers and are appealing for anyone who was there between 8pm and 11pm, particularly between the Halfpenny Bridge and Llanllwchaiarn stretch, to speak to us.

“We are treating this extremely seriously. The victim is being supported by specialists.

“Local residents can expect to see an increased police presence today, as specialist search teams and house-to-house officers carry out their investigations.”
