LLANELLI’S PHOENIX THEATRE GROUP RAISES CURTAIN ON MORAL THRILLER

Next week’s Phoenix production at Y Ffwrnes could not be further away from the Group’s previous production, the French farce “Once Bitten”.

“It may be a case of from the ridiculous to the sublime in the choice of Henrik Ibsen’s searing moral thriller-drama “PILLARS OF THE COMMUNITY” says Phoenix director W. Noel Rees.

“The choice of this play will be a real challenge for the Group to stage a work by one of the world’s greatest playwrights.” he continued.

“Ibsen is generally regarded as the shaper of modern theatre who tempered naturalism with social responsibility and individual psychology.”

“It has a very large cast and enthusiasm is high with the players to bring this classic work alive on the stage” Mr. Rees added.

Karsten Bernick is a highly-respected business-man and a pillar of the community but he has achieved his success on long-buried secrets and lies. Eventually they begin to haunt him when the unexpected return of a fugitive brother puts his future in peril.

Details of a long-buried sex scandal and embezzlement come to the surface which force Bernick to face his family, his community and his demons. The play examines what defines a man’s character when lies are better left untold.

In order to avoid exposure, he sets in motion a chain of events which threatens to destroy all he holds most dear. Will be get away with it?

Samuel Adamson’s critically-acclaimed modern version of Ibsen’s play for the Royal National Theatre fills Ibsen’s gripping moral thriller with humour, irony and truth, making it an absorbing, illuminating and truly resonant play for today.

A very large cast is full of Phoenix regulars: Stephen McDermid, Elizabeth Bevan, Rhianon Taylor, Daniel James, Gemma Jones, Bruce Burniston, Lisa Isaac, Anthony Evans, Andrew Sayers, Martin Woodrow, Gordon Hyde, Kathryn Creel, Carys Awen Jones, Katy Lewis, Jeremy Lewis, Trudi Rees-Davies and Roy Tillman.

The Phoenix Theatre Group is delighted to introduce young Cole Davies and Alys Hipkiss who are making their debuts in “Pillars of the Community” as well as guest appearances by other Phoenix members onstage!

Llanelli’s Phoenix Theatre Group assures audiences of a memorable and absorbing evening of theatre.

“Pillars of the Community” runs for three nights at Y Ffwrnes, Llanelli, from next Thursday to Saturday October 11th, 12th and 13th, nightly at 7.30pm.
