Division One Football – Cwmamman Utd vs Llantwit Major
The visit of Llantwit Major to Grenig Park (September 29) saw one of the great Cwmamman United comebacks ending with the Blues taking all 3 points. One nil down at half time and reduced to 10 men the Cwmamman players produced one of the best halves of the season to score two late goals for a well earned but surprising victory.
On a sunny afternoon (September 29) Cwmamman brought in veteran keeper Carwyn Evans for the unavailable Chris Curtis. He was hardly tested early on and both sides were well matched. Ryan Hurlow was put through early for Cwm but a last ditch tackle prevented the shot. Then after 35 mins the Llantwit Major centre forward was put clean through and managed to push the ball past the oncoming Evans for a 1 nil lead.
Llantwit Major then took the upper hand but Cwm had a great effort from Colin Harris tipped over the bar. Just on half time disaster struck as Nathan Mcneill was sent off for a strong tackle near the touchline. Half time arrived shortly afterwards and Cwm supporters feared the worse.
Cwm adapted playing the offside trap well with Gareth Howarth who was a tower of strength at centre back, with Luke Allen and Declan John defending tirelessly at full backs. Cwmamman were getting stronger by the minute and were taking control of the game. Ross Jones and Ross Morgan were dominant in the midfield and chances were coming.
Ryan Thomas blasted a shot over from outside the box after a great ball from Luke Allen while Ryan Hurlow forced a great save. At the other end, the dependable Carwyn Evans made a great goal line save keeping Cwm in the game.
Ashley Curtis was brought on and it was not long before he made his presence felt with a few sharp runs. Then it happened, Curtis ran on to long ball and fired a shot from the edge of the box low and hard past the Llantwit keeper to wild celebrations!
Then unbelievably the 10 men took the lead when Brieg Matthews, who had replaced the non stop Chrissy Allen with another non stop performance forced a rebound off the keeper and Ryan Hurlow pounced to score.
In injury time the Llantwit centre half was sent off for a 2nd yellow card, having possibly had 3 lives through the match. A very tense finish when Llantwit had a free kick on the edge of the box but the brave Cwm defence with Morgan now playing at centre back along with Howarth held firm.
Yet another thriller at the park and not great for the blood pressure.
Cwm move to 4th place, their highest ever and welcome Pontypridd to Grenig at 2:30pm this Saturday (October 6). See you there!
